Drexel University Computing Academy Completes its Third Year Connecting Teens and Technology

Behind every world-changing computing innovation there is an innovative tech enthusiast - and the next big idea could come from a member of Drexel University Computing Academy's (DUCA) class of 2011. DUCA ran Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 30, 2011, bringing together 36 high school students from across the U.S. During this year's program, students were exposed to all computing degrees at Drexel University, including engineering, programming, networks, information technology, game design, even computer security and business.

The iSchool and University of Louisiana Lafayette Collaborate with Industry and Government for Proposed Center for Visual and Decision Informatics
|
The iSchool at Drexel and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are working to establish a national research center for Visual and Decision Informatics. This collaborative effort will be funded by the Industry/University Cooperative Research Center program of the National Science Foundation, government and industry partners, and university matching funds.
The Center for Visual and Decision Informatics serves to drive continuous innovation through knowledge sharing among partners leading to invention and commercialization of information and knowledge engineering technologies for decision support. Its mission is to research and develop next generation visual and decision support tools and techniques to enable decision makers in government and industry to fundamentally improve the way their organization's information is interpreted and analyzed.

iSchool MS(LIS) Student Wins 2nd Annual Kate McClelland and Kathy Krasniewicz Memorial Scholarship
Congratulations to Master of Science in Library and Information Science student Melinda Roberts, who was awarded the 2nd annual Kate McClelland and Kathy Krasniewicz Memorial Scholarship, coordinated by Random House Publishers. 
Roberts previously served as a library assistant at Mount Laurel Library, and continues to work with the library as a volunteer. Library staff recommended Roberts for the award, noting that she has great devotion to the library community and shows promise in the field. The award provides funds for a new librarian or library student who has never attended an American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference. It includes travel to and from the conference, hotel, conference registration, and a ticket to the Newbery Caldecott banquet.
iSchool Doctoral Student Sofia Athenikos Receives 2011 Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
Congratulations to iSchool doctoral candidate Sofia J. Athenikos, who has been named one of six recipients of the 2011 Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded by library and information studies honor society Beta Phi Mu to LIS doctoral students who are working on their dissertations. Read More

iSchool Associate Professor Gerry Stahl Presents Educational Research in China
iSchool Associate Professor Gerry Stahl served as Program Chair of the International Conference of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL 2011) held in Hong Kong from July 4-8. The conference drew researchers, practitioners and policy makers from 39 countries. Following the CSCL conference, Stahl participated in post-conference events in Mainland China at major university centers of educational research .
Read More Faculty News Briefs Chaomei Chen, Associate Professor, gave a keynote speech, entitled "The Nature of Creativity: Mechanism, Measurement, and Analysis", at ICSTI2001 - Upgrading Information to Knowledge, Organized by the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI), in Beijing, China on June 7, 2011. Dr. Chen also gave an invited talk on "Visualizing Science: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight" in a spotlight session of the 102nd Annual Meeting of the Special Libraries Association in Philadelphia on June 13, 2011. iSchool Professor Katherine McCain attended the 2011 LINKS workshop on Social Network Analysis at the University of Kentucky in June. Delia Neuman, iSchool Associate Professor, attended TEDx Philadelphia on June 25 and the annual conference of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in Philadelphia June 26-29. iSchool Professor Il-Yeol Song presented the paper "EIPW: A Knowledge-Based Database Modeling Tool" at the First International Workshop on Conceptualization of Modeling Methods (CMM 2011) held with Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE 2011) Conference , London, UK, June 2011. The paper was co-authored with Ornsiri Thonggoom, iSchool doctoral student, and Dr. Yuan An. According to the SCOPUS (extracted on Fri Jul 1 22:54:02 BST 2011), Dr. Song's paper entitled "A UML Profile for Multidimensional Modeling in Data Warehouses," published in Data and Knowledge Engineering Journal (vol. 59, No 3, pp725-769) in 2006, was found to be the most cited paper among all the papers published in the journal in the past five years. A paper by Ornsiri Thonggoom, Dr. Song, and iSchool Assistant Professor Yuan An, "Semi-Automatic Conceptual Data Modeling Using Entity and Relationship Instance Repositories," has been accepted by 30th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling to be held at Brussels, Belgium, Oct 31 to Nov 3, 2011.

Welcome Haley Dervinis The iSchool at Drexel welcomes Haley Dervinis to its Graduate Admissions Team. Haley joins the iSchool as a Graduate Admissions Counselor, having previously worked in student recruitment and support at Irish American University. Haley holds an MS in Global and International Education from Drexel University.

Karen Calhoun, (MS 1983), Vice President of Metadata Applications of OCLC announced her retirement in May 2011. She is an internationally respected librarian, instrumental in extending WorldCat's global relevance and charting a new course for the future of OCLC metadata services.
Anthony Bucci (BSIS, 2004) was named one of the Philadelphia Business Journal's "40 Under 40" for 2011. Mr. Bucci is co-founder of RevZilla.com, an e-commerce site that offers motorcycle gear and accessories. Earlier this year, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce named RevZilla.com the 2011 Emerging Business of the Year.
Walter Champion Jr., Esq. (MS, 1978) was appointed Of Counsel at the personal injury law firm of Brooks Harrison- Attorneys At Law. Dr. Champion is a tenured Senior Professor at Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law where he is Chair and Professor of the George Foreman Sports and Entertainment Law Endowment.
Michael Koenig, PhD (PhD, 1982), Professor of Knowledge Management at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, co-authored a new work, "Knowledge Management (KM) Processes in Organizations: Theoretical Foundations and Practice" (Morgan & Claypool Publishers, January 2011). Dr. Koenig was the founding Dean of the College of Information and Computer Science at Long Island University.
