Emporia Farmers Market Celebrating 30 Years

The Veggie Gazette
Fresh & Local

September 2012

Volume 6, No. 9

Greetings!

Am I the only one having trouble believing that fall is really here? I was feeling doubtful, in spite of what the calendar pages were telling me, until Delmer Hinrichs gave me a note sharing what he expects to bring to market from his fall garden.

Lettuce Mix

Green Beans

Kale

Radishes

Gourds

Swiss Chard

Corn Stalks

Winter Squash

Acorn Squash

Butternut Squash

Hubbard Squash

Cushaw Squash

Apple harvest is well underway. Watermelon and cantaloupe continue to show up in abundance. Eggplant, potatoes, okra, peppers and onions are just a sampling of things that made it home from market in my bag this past week.

If that list doesn't make you want to pull out your cookbook and get cozy in the kitchen, I don't know what will.

Markets started big and crops came early this year. We starting seeing tomatoes at the second market in May and there were still tomatoes at the first market in September! Even with the dry weather, this is one of the most extended seasons I have seen and the produce certainly qualifies as better than ever.

Two full months remain of twice weekly farmers markets. We look forward to some more great entertainment by local musicians, including the farmers market debut of Carlos Pringle. Come visit with your neighbors at the Emporia Farmers Market and fill your bags full of local produce and home baked goods.

See you at the market!

ESU International Students at the Market

We had a fun market on August 11 when approximately 130 International Students from ESU joined us for pancakes at the market. This is the second year the market and HALO (Hispanic American Leadership Organization) have hosted ESU students during orientation week. We look forward to continuing this new tradition!
