National Engineers Week Future City Design Challenge

Workshop Title: New Jersey Regional Future City Competition for Middle School Students
Description: The Future City Competition is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team with an educator and engineer mentor to plan cities using SimCityTM 4 Deluxe software; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January. Regional winners represent their region at the National Finals in Washington, DC in February.

Title: How to Stay Up-To-Date With NASA STEM Education
Description: How do I stay current with NASA STEM ed. opportunities and resources? How do I figure out what NASA STEM classroom resources are available for a specific lesson I'm teaching? How do I find out about the latest student AND teacher NASA opportunities? What are the local NASA STEM ed. resources available to me as a teacher? What assistance can NASA ed. provide to me in my robotics class? These, and other questions, will be answered in this session dealing with accessing and incorporating NASA STEM Ed. Resources in your classroom. Participants will have an opportunity to meet their NJ/NASA Ed. liaison and ask questions about NASA ed. A bag full of NASA ed. resources will be passed out to participants at the end of the session.

Workshop Title: Integrating Art into STEM Through Engineering Design [STEAM]
Description: The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the Center for Innovation in Engineering Education (CIESE)at Stevens Institute of Technology are collaborating to develop the STEAM program. This presentation will describe activities that use the engineering design process and encourage collaboration between middle school technology and art teachers. Hands-on projects including mobiles, mechanical sculptures, paper animations and solar trees will be described. Handouts and other resources will be provided.

It will focus on a variety of "design and build" activities that can be incorporated into the Middle School Technology Education classroom. Design briefs, material options, group structures, and cross-curricular connections will be presented.

Workshop Title: Green Power and Energy
Description: A Green Power and Energy unit will be presented that will give you everything from interactive lessons to projects that can be scaled to any size or skill level. The unit's lessons pull information from areas such as mechanics, thermal properties, Bernoulli's Principal (fluid dynamics), and much more. By covering a number of topics the teacher has the ability to create their own projects as well as lengthen, shorten, or teach to whatever they are comfortable with. The two main projects that will be presented are a solar cooker and a wind turbine.

Furniture Design and Woodworking with Google SketchUp

Workshop Title: Furniture Design and Woodworking Using Google SketchUp
Description: This workshop will highlight some of the ways students interested in woodworking can use 3-D solid modeling software for free, from Google SketchUp, to design custom furniture to be later built in the woodshop. The group will discuss how to implement SketchUp as a design tool for woodworking, and utilize a multitude of available free resources to make the software easy to start using today. Presenter, Steve Richards will also share some of the elements he's incorporated into his woodworking program to improve upon and modernize a somewhat traditional curriculum. He will also offer some examples of innovative Tech. Ed. activities that can be done in the woodshop on a reasonable budget.

Ingenuity Based Technology Education

Workshop Title: Ingenuity Based Technology Education
Description: Developed by three past-presidents of NJTEEA, Ingenuity Based Technology Education (IBTE) is a new approach to delivering the content of Technology and Engineering in a high school setting. The theme of the program and desired personal quality in students is "ingenuity" and the approach identifies fifty ingenuity skills to guide the content of the program.
Included in the content of this new model are concepts of entrepreneurship, intellectual property, marketing, leadership and management, careers, and finance. Case studies, focused professional guest speakers, and field experiences are designed to enhance the course experience for the students. Through an integrated capstone project and associated event called the Ingenuity Challenge students are also able to showcase self-selected project work in a motivating, meaningful, and authentic manner.

Description: "CNC Shark Pro" demonstration will show how easy and affordable Computer Numerical Control Routing can be for your class room. With optional cutting bits, the Shark Pro can mill, engrave, or inlay a wide variety of materials such as wood, plastics, foam, glass, Corian, laminates, metal, concrete, and other textiles. Participants can learn how simple the software program is used to make signs, plaques, name plates, molds and forms, jewelry, lithopanes, musical instruments, toys, scale models, memorabilia, furniture, arts and crafts, and other items. Participants will learn the how easy the program employs basic Computer Aided Drafting commands, fonts, and even photographs or drawings easily downloaded from the Internet or other sources.

Engineering Design - A Life Changing Opportunity (STEM & US FIRST Robotics)

Workshop Title: Engineering Design - A Life-Changing Opportunity! (STEM & FIRST Robotics)
Description: In K-12 education today, a "buzz" word is STEM. What is STEM and how can students learn about STEM disciplines? One opportunity for K-12 students to become actively engaged in STEM is to become involved with FIRST Robotics! FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology - has four programs that offer hands-on/minds-on applied STEM learning experiences that are team-based and mentor-guided. The four programs are FIRST Robotics Competition (Ages 14-18); FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC - Ages 14-18); FIRST LEGO League (Ages 9-14); and Junior FIRST LEGO League (Ages 6-9). All programs can be staged as either an extra-curricular activity or part of a classroom-based curriculum. FIRST is in over 100 NJ high schools and there are 200 FLL teams! FIRST programs have inspired many students to seek post-secondary technical studies at the AAS, BS, MS and Ph.D. levels that have led to careers in related technical fields. Workshop Title: Engineering by Design (EbD)
Description: Engineering byDesign (EbD) is the only standards-based, K-12, iSTEM (integrative STEM) curriculum in the country. It is produced by the ITEEA and all of the online assessments and student survey data are collected from each of the 23 National EbD Consortium states and used to measure K-12 Technology & Engineering Literacy. This was the first year that EbD was introduced in NJ as part of a 3-year grant funded by Edison Ventures and managed through TCNJ's Center for Excellence in STEM education. The pilot cohort consisted of 20+ school districts. Join us at this session to hear from those pilot teachers and project director, Chris Anderson, to find out more about EbD, the free resources and how to join in on the first T&E student achievement data project in NJ.

Workshop Title: Communication and Video Technology
Description: Currently, clean air, clean water, health care, and renewable energy are among the topics constantly in the headlines. In this workshop, a project will be presented that allows digital video students to choose one of these topics where technology is in the process of making great advancements. The digital video research team will research the technology and construct a functioning model of the process being used. The purpose of the constructed model is to simulate the technology being researched and the team will record and analyze its daily performance data. During the investigative research process the teams are encouraged to interview and collaborate with related professionals. The research team will document these several weeks of construction, performance analysis, and economic studies on video. The completed edited video research presentation and conclusion is designed to target the middle school age group. Lessons and project/unit resources will be shared.
