Luther Cafeteria
  Luther College

Decorah, IA

Project Profile

The Luther College cafeteria in the Dahl Centennial Union was recently renovated by Schwab LLC, in collaboration with KKE/DLR Group,

to provide a more enjoyable on-campus dining experience.

The cafeteria serves approximately 3,000 meals and 1,200 students and faculty daily, and

was fully operational throughout the renovation.

An avant-garde steel ceiling finish, complimented by similar freestanding corian walls, provide a very interesting ambiance to the overall dining experience. Unique and specially built banquette seating is scattered throughout the facility to provide a full range of intimate and group gatherings.

Energy efficient lighting and windows, new Baltix brand table tops from eco-friendly products and recycled materials, and low VOC wall finishes compliment the sustainable philosophy that Luther implements in all of its daily operations.

Sustainable design continues to be a compelling topic in the building industry. The benefits including reduced life cycle operating and building performance costs, decreased waste streams and increased building value are great enough to at least peak one's interest, while the costs associated with certification of a new building project often leave owners wondering about the worthiness of pursuing that level of investment. The good news is that if you do not require the marketing value of certification many of the benefits achieved from sustainable practices are still available through careful planning and investigation.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's

2008 EIA Annual Energy Outlook, buildings represent 38.9% of U.S. primary energy use. They are one of the heaviest consumers of natural resources and account for a significant portion of the greenhouse gas emissions purported to effect climate change. Buildings in the U.S. also account for 38% of all CO2 emissions and represent 72% of consumption. With numbers like these it's no wonder why sustainable practices continue to be a growing practice in the construction industry.

Schwab LLC's company principals and LEED accredited staff have been involved with sustainable concepts throughout our extensive careers. We understand that there is no cookie cutter answer for developing a sustainable building and we are available at all times to help you make informed decisions about your project.

Our experience includes Brownfield redevelopment of contaminated sites; storm water management to minimize construction impact to waterways; building automation systems to optimize energy performance; automated lighting and thermal control; use of daylighting in non-traditional occupancies; and pre- and post-construction energy assessments. The experience gained from these projects helps us strengthen our sustainable offerings and provide a broad range of options to our customers. We also constantly assess our project waste stream and research ways to increase recycling and reuse on the job site.

We understand that there can be many challenges you face in an effort to have a more sustainable building, including cost. We encourage construction buyers to analyze the cost/benefit of products and apply that information to the building's life cycle. In addition, our company principals collaborate with you to develop a competitive estimate and put in place a plan that is right for your building.

There is no doubt that the benefits of sustainable design can be both intriguing and confusing. Whether you need help navigating the sustainable building concept now or in the future, Schwab LLC will be here to help you throughout the design and build process.
