Road Runners Club of America
Issue: #2011-43October 31, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

Practice will be at 6:30 P.M. at Wakefield High School.

As I (Mark) watched the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday at mile 23 in Crystal City, a smile came upon my face.  Although it was cold while spectating, the atmosphere warmed me up quickly. There was music, cowbells & blow-horns, plenty of cheering fans, and hot coffee was readily available. All that being said, the marathoners were the main attraction. Mile 23 is crunchtime and the intensity and focus that I witnessed was moving. I was able to cheer on Martha Merz as she whizzed past, and I apologize for missing our other members. Most runners I did not know, but hollering for them was rewarding just the same. If you haven't watched a race lately, I strongly recommend it. It brightened my day.  Congratulations to all our NOVA members who ran and watched yesterday's Marine Corps Marathon.

We have reached the time of year where we need to start thinking about
next year's NOVA leadership roles. We will need someone to run for
president as well as other positions on NOVA's board--Mark and Samantha will not be able to do it next year. This has been a great year and I (Samantha--can only speak for myself) enjoyed setting things in motion and doing my part to contribute to the club after being a passive member for many years. I have no regrets being co-president and I will be
available to help the next president of NOVA, as the previous presidents
have helped Mark and I. Please let Mark (mad-241@hotmail.com), Samantha (sam@tecole.com) and Amanda (mandy13082@aol.com) know if you are interested in running for a club position.

Anyone interested in hosting a Cookie Run please e-mail Samantha and Mark.

We are still holding Thursday night tempo runs at 5:30 P.M.  If you are
interested in running with us or leading a run (if you lead a run you
can choose the time to have others meet you), please e-mail Samantha
(sam@tecole.com) and Dave Wertz (wertzdf@hotmail.com).

See you out there,

Mark Drosky (mad-241@hotmail.com) &

Tuesday Track: 6:30 P.M.

This Tuesday, Track will be at 6:30 P.M. at Wakefield High School this week, located at 4901 South Chesterfield Road, Arlington,VA.  Be sure to arrive early to warm-up and stretch properly before the workout.

Coach Jerry's Workout

Congratulations to all who ran Marine Corps!  We had several excellent performances, led as always by the great Martha Merz, who was the first masters finisher.  Martha has proven that she is human, and not superhuman, by struggling to regain her fitness after recent back surgery, but she is almost all the way back to the dominant level we all took for granted a few years ago, and she's going to keep getting better.  We also had a great run from Erin Masterson, who took an astounding 25 minutes off her PR.  After Erin made the very poor decision not to allow me to coach her in college, despite my weekly phone calls begging her to attend American, 10 years later she is finally reaping the benefits of my brilliance, as this result plainly shows.  Congratulations also go to Jerry Doyle, who trained very well and was ready to run a big PR but who incurred medical problems during the race.  Doyle will be back better than ever soon.  Finally, congratulations to new member Bob "Steve" Koeppen, who ran a big PR of 18:13 at Goblin Gallop 5k despite falling on black ice in the last mile.

The fall season is just getting started, and we've got several big races coming up soon, so I expect a packed house tomorrow.  We should have a great night to run and Wakefield under the lights is a wonderful venue, so come on out and join the party.  The workout will be 6 x 800 with a 400 jog.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout.  See you out there tomorrow.

Coach Jerry
