Greetings NOVA Runners,
Practice will be at 6:30 P.M. at TC Williams High School
NOVA Running Club ran a water point for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon. The forecast was rain with temperatures in the forties on SUN morning. Despite the threat of bad weather all our volunteers arrived at 0645 or sooner to pitch in and support the race. We managed the water point with high school students from a school in Bowie, MD. As the morning progressed it got windier and colder and our volunteers toughed it out with running noses, chilled bodies, and cold hands pouring water and powerade, handing filled cups to the runners, and cleaning up after a projected 5,000 runners came through water point #7 on American Way Blvd.
No doubt volunteering requires people to get up early and work in the elements and everytime NOVA Running Club asks for volunteers people step up and get involved. Thank you!
I'd like to recognize the following people for volunteering and making this effort successful. I appreciate your tenacity and dedication. Tiffany Baker, Joe Bothwell, Fred Carson, Das Indrajit, Agatha "Dutch" Engel, Mark Drosky, Dave Haeffner, Dave Lambert, Molly Lambert, Karen Davis Miller, Mike Naff, George Souza, and Stephanie Wolf. To those who'd didn't volunteer there will be more opportunities and I hope you consider it when we ask.
Sincerely, Lynn Connors, NOVA Volunteer Coordinator A hearty "Thank You" goes out to Lynn Connors for doing a wonderful job of coordinating NOVA's Wilson Bridge waterstop. Her coffee and donuts were also a much needed relief from the elements. Joe Bothwell captured the moments as our official photographer: Click here to view NOVA Water Stop Photos. Agatha (Dutch) and her husband Arthur opened their home to us and hosted the post-race breakfast. We appreciate all the support that our members demonstrated yesterday.
We are still holding Thursday night tempo runs at 5:30 P.M. If you are interested in running with us or leading a run (if you lead a run you can choose the time to have others meet you), please e-mail Samantha (sam@tecole.com) and Dave Wertz (wertzdf@hotmail.com).
See you out there,
Mark Drosky (mad-241@hotmail.com) &
Samantha Cole (sam@tecole.com) NOVA Co-Presidents

| Coach Jerry's Workout |
We had excellent performances in the past week from across the world, the country, and close to home. Internationally, JP had a tremendous performance in the World Duathlon championships in Spain. I am really proud to know that we have a world class athlete training with us, and my hat is off to JP! Nationally, Al Hamdani run a huge marathon PR at Twin Cities yesterday. As happy as Al is with the result, I informed him of the bad news, which is that now that I see that he's capable of running fast, I'm going to subject him to my iron-fisted coaching style to make sure he keeps getting better. And on the local scene, Jerry Doyle, who made the mistake of showing me his potential and as a result is now being harrassed by me on an hourly basis, ran an excellent half at Wlison Bridge. Also at Wilson Bridge, Annie Scoggin had the honor of serving as a guide for a visually impaired athlete, and happily reports that they only fell once, which she considered a triumph. A hearty well done to all! We are apparently going to have a beautiful night tomorrow, so I expect a huge turnout as we do our final preparation for the Army 10 miler. The workout will be Betty Blank's favorite (and if it's Betty's favorite, it should be your favorite too), a 4-3-2-1 ladder. For the uninitiated, that means 4 laps, 3 laps, 2 laps, 1 lap, and we'll take a one lap jog in between all of it. For those of you who are running Army, this is an excellent tuneup. For those of you who are not, it's a fun workout and good way to work on increasing the intensity at the end of a workout. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler. See you out there tomorrow.
Coach Jerry
