Gang, we had a great weekend of racing, as NOVA athletes tore it up in numerous major races across the country. Congratulations to Coast Guard Mike Naff for his marathon PR of 3:00:20, which he ran in horrid weather conditions in Utah. Mike is on the cusp of breaking the 3 hour barrier, and given the fact that his PR was 3:16 ten months ago, I'm confident he will go well under 3 in his next crack at it later this fall. We also had great performances this weekend from Ali Piacente, Kate Dart, Dave Wertz, and Jason Myers. It's particularly fitting that Ali is included in the company of Kate, Dave, and Jason, because the three of them have successfully transitioned from solid NOVA runners into elites within the last two years. Ali is now on the verge of making that transition, as well. With her 1:27:58 half marthon yesterday in Philadelphia, Ali proved to herself what has been apparent to me since the first time I saw her run, which is that she has the capability of being an exceptional marathoner. Ali ran a PR of over 6 minutes yesterday, and when she tapers for her the Steamtown Marathon, I am confident that she will run an equivalent PR. Ali's rapid improvement demonstrates once again that in this sport, hard work is rewarded. Well done! And we'll be hearing more from Kate, Dave, and Jason this fall, so stay tuned.
On an important administrative note, I still need a number for one of my elite athletes who wants to run Marine Corps. The transfer period closes on September 26, so time is running short. Please, if you have a number you can't use, or know of someone who has one, let me know right away.
For the workout tomorrow, I hope to see a large turnout. We're entering the heart of the racing season, so now is the time to do the hard training that will allow you to race well. The workout will be everyone's favorite, 12 x 400 with a 200 jog. It's important that you run relaxed early on, as twelve 400s will seem like a very large number if you run the first couple too hard.
As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout. See you out there tomorrow.
Coach Jerry
