Road Runners Club of America
Issue: #2011-27July 11, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

We will hold track practice Tuesday, July 12th at 7 P.M. at TC Williams High School.

As you all know our infamous member Bob Wiener ran in the Masters Track Championships in Sacramento. Not only was he a participant, but he also managed the media coverage. Apparently he is enjoying himself, since he ran well in his first race at the meet, an 8k cross-country race. He ended up beating ten people in his 55-64 age group race. He is also entered in the 1500 run and 2000 meter steeplechase. Click here to see his press release for the US team. Bob said that "So far, the most fun I've had is talking with 91-year old Ralph Maxwell of Texas after he set a world 90+ record in the decathlon.  He was so excited and proud. And wow does he look lean, mean, and fit-at 91!  That's what masters track is all about."

We will be having a NOVA 5K Run for Jerry on August 25th at 6:30 P.M. at Bluemont Park, by the 4th Street parking lot. The run will benefit our awesome coach, Jerry Alexander, to show him our appreciation for his time and commitment to our club over the past six years. Jerry spends a lot of time doing personal coaching for our members voluntarily which is outside his regular obligation of writing the workouts and showing up at the track. He happily helps out where he can without asking for much in return. Many coaches with his

expertise ask for much more than what we have been paying him. Our fee for the race will be $20, so that we can raise enough money to give him an overdue raise.  We promise good prizes for the fee; ask Betty she received one last year for placing. Please come out and show your support for our coach either to run the race or to volunteer.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Mark (mad-241@hotmail.com) and Lyn Connors (lynconn450@aol.com).

Our next Cookie Run / Social Run will be on Friday, July 22nd. Sara (one of our latest and greatest members) will be hosting the run. The run will be around Burke Lake. Her address is: 9716 Walthorne Court, Burke VA. Most of us will do only one loop (4.5 miles once around the lake), but those of you that are more ambitious may want to do another loop. Please come out and bring your favorite snack or dish to the run. Please let Mark or Samantha know via E-mail if you plan on attending.

"Grub for Good" will be holding a fun run on Wednesday, July 20th, at 6:30 P.M. "Grub for Good"  is a partnership between Potomac River Runners, Front Page Restaurant, and other area supporters (mainly fitness groups and running clubs). The run will leave from the Potomac River Running Store, next to the Gold's Gym in Ballston). After the run they'll have a get-together at the Front Page Restaurant (4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22203, across the street from the Arlington Ballston Mall). The entry fee is only $5, and includes discounts on food and drinks. The organizer is a mutual friend of mine (Samantha) and Laura O'Hara and they support a good cause--people with food and body image issues.

Our club was recently written up in the Arlington Connection Newspaper. Here is the link if you want to read it:  Arlington Connection Sports Edition

Tuesday Track: 7:00 P.M.

This Tuesday, Track will be at 7:00 P.M. at TC Williams High School this week, located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria,VA.  Be sure to arrive early to warm-up and stretch properly before the workout.

Coach Jerry's Workout
Gang, we're going to move practice back to 7 pm tomorrow on account of the heat.  It is my judgment that the later start will make the workout safer, and of course safety is paramount.  I recognize that this is not convenient for some of you, but it is my considered opinion that this is the right move.

Even with the later start, it is going to be HOT out there.  Thus, if you are going to do the workout, you must be sure to hydrate fully throughout the day, bring water or sports drink with you, and eat a light lunch.  Remember, safety is our number one priority, so if you have trouble with the heat tomorrow, or on any of your runs, stop right away, get into the shade, and drink water.  Let's not take any chances out there.  The workout will be 10 x 400 with a 200 jog.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout.  See you out there.
