Issue: #2011-27July 5, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

Track practice will be at its usual time, 6:30 P.M. at TC Williams High School.

Having recently completed my annual exam with the dermatologist, I strongly recommend reading the below article concerning skin protection.  Be a stickler when it comes to wearing sunscreen. Slather up, Mark. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Running_in_the_Sun__Tips_for_Protecting_Your_Skin.htm

We hope you had a great 4th of July!

See you out there,

Mark Drosky (mad-241@hotmail.com) & Samantha Cole (sam@tecole.com)
NOVA Co-Presidents

Tuesday Track: 6:30PM,

This Tuesday, Track will be at 6:30PM at TC Williams High School this week, located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria,VA.  Be sure to arrive early to warm-up and stretch properly before the workout.

Coach Jerry's Workout

We had two major breakthrough performances this weekend.  First, Jason Myers ran a huge PR of 15:43 for 5k.  Jason had been frustrated the last several weeks in his attempt to break 16 minutes by running courses that were not properly marked, but when he had the chance to run a 5k on the one course we know for sure is accurate, a track, he seized the opportunity.  Jason ran a PR for 2 miles en route and kept rolling, and in the process proved that he is not only fully recovered from a serious injury, he is better than ever, and he has every intention of making this a short-lived PR as he continues racing this summer.  In addition, Kate Dart shattered a significant barrier, knocking over 20 seconds off her PR and dropping under 18 minutes.  Kate has had remarkable success at shorter races this spring and summer, and when she moves back to the longer races where she is more comfortable this fall, great things are going to happen!

Those of you who were at the track last week know that we cancelled the workout because of lightning.  While it was not necessarily the popular decision, it was unquestionably the right decision.  Co-President Mark Drosky made the hard call, and he should be congratulated for putting the safety of our athletes first.  That is a decision that I will support every time.  It also bears mentioning that our club officers are volunteers.  If you have an issue with a decision of this type, I invite you to take it up with me, rather than with the club officers.  I am the only one who is paid to be at practice, and if you want to express your displeasure, feel free to talk to me.

The weather tomorrow looks favorable for this time of year, so we can get back to business.  The workout will be 2 x 1200, 2 x 800, 2 x 400, all with a 400 jog.  Remember to be careful out there, as we will not be the only ones using the track.  If you are not 100 percent sure of what being careful means in this context, please refer to my detailed instructions about track etiquette in last weeks newsletter. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.
