Issue: #2011-25June 20, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

Track practice will be at its usual time, 6:30 P.M. at TC Williams High School.

We had a nice group (5 members) show up at the Iwo Jima on Friday eve, for our 2nd "Cookie Run" of the summer. As we ventured thru Rosslyn and over the Key Bridge, we stopped into the Georgetown Running Company and raided their water cooler.  While there, Charlie (GRC runner), joined us for our jaunt thru the Glover Archbold Trail. The trail provided us with a soft running surface and shade. We ran up to New Mexico Ave. where we turned around and headed back to Georgetown. At GRC, we snacked on Samantha's homemade cookies and were surprised to see Pizza & Beer provided by our hosts. One member actually bought a pair of shoes and we had a nice visit with the store manager and its employees. We all left there with a wonderful social experience. As we ran the mile back to the Iwo Jima (cramps and all), we remarked on what a pleasant running event it had turned out to be.  We send a hearty thank you to Charlie Ban, Jerry Greenlaw and Eduardo Rincon at GRC for their efforts and genuine hospitality. Check out the link below about the Glover Archbold Trail: http://www.rundc.com/Trails/DC/GloverArchbold.htm

Recently, one of Jerry's elite runners was hit by a car and suffered some mild injuries despite wearing a helmet. A few months ago an elite female runner and Olympic trials qualifier (Sally Meyerhoff) was killed on a bike when she failed to stop at a four way intersection. Many accidents can be avoided if you know what to look for. Take a look at the link to learn more about cycling and your surroundings: http://bicyclesafe.com/

See you out there,

Coach Jerry's Workout

Gang, this past week one of my elite runners got hit by a car while biking, and it was bad (he went through the windshield of the car head first).  It is no exaggeration to say that if this young man was not wearing a helmet, he would be in the morgue right now.  Please, I implore you, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET.  And exercise great care when you're around cars, both on a bike and when you're running.  Safety must be the highest priority.  Disaster can strike in the blink of an eye, so never, ever take chances.

For the workout this week, we'll do 4 x 800, 4 x 400, all with a 400 jog.  It's going to be hot out there so be sure to bring water, and stay fully hydrated throughout the day.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout.  See you out there.
