Issue: #2011-21May 23, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

I, Mark, hope that everyone enjoyed the beautiful racing weather this weekend. I encourage members to enter races that they haven't done before. I've been told that I'm not receptive to change, as I have run the Rockville 8k Twilighter for 21 consecutive years. That being said, I ventured to the Ashburn 5k/10k this morning. I found it relaxing and less stressful than the bigger races. It had a family-neighborhood feel to it with just over 700 participants. William Cowper quotes  "Variety's the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavor".

A friend sent me the attached article about running streaks. I found it interesting and thought that I was reading about myself a few times. www.thepostgame.com/features/201105/runners-feat-travels-decades

See you out there,

Coach Jerry's Workout

Gang, the racing season is winding down but there are still some good opportunities to get out there and compete.  And, if you're looking for a race, keep in mind the Fathers Day 8k.  As I said last week, it's a great race for a great cause. http://www.fathersday8k.com/

We're going to have a hot night on the track tomorrow, so summer rules are in effect.  If you plan to come to practice, you MUST fully hydrate throughout the day, and be sure to eat a light lunch.  You MUST bring water with you to the track, and be sure to drink during the workout.  We're not acclimated to the heat yet, so it's really important to be extra careful right now.  For that reason, we're going to stick to 400s again this week.  I don't like to run the same workout 2 weeks in a row, but safety is our number one concern, and I'm not willing to take any chances, so we'll do 10 x 400 with a 200 jog.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout.  See you out there.
