Issue: #2011-18May 2, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

Track practice will be at Ft. Ward this Tuesday May 3rd and next

week May 10th.

"My Philadelphia Story #117" (Mark Drosky)

I had the pleasure of attending the 117th Penn Relays at storied Franklin Field, this past weekend. I've made the trek to Philly almost every year since 1990. That's when I moved to DC and my brother Al, became cross-country & track coach at his alma mater (Georgia Tech). The relays feature high school, college and Olympic athletes. Thursday night at the track is "distance nite". It begins with the fan favorite steeple-chase, followed by heats of 3k, 5k and 10k races.
I chatted with "Coach Jerry" on the track's infield as we watched a plethora of races. He had 2 athletes competing. As the gun cracked and Alby Williams bolted to victory (13.50) in the Masters Men's 100m dash 70 and older, it enforced on me that as runners we are all competing against the clock, in some fashion or another. Coach Jerry told me recently "as you gave it your best shot and left it all out there on the course, I could never ask for more than that from any of my athletes". Those words echoed thru my mind all weekend,
as I watched all types of runners chasing down their dreams.

 See you out there,

Tuesday Track: 6:30PM, Ft Ward Park

This Tuesday, Track will be at 6:30PM at Ft Ward Park this week, located at 4401 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA.  Be sure to arrive early to warm-up and stretch properly before the workout.

*Note: Be sure to carefully read the newsletter over the next few weeks as this is the time of year when we have to begin juggling tracks due to varying school sports seasons.*

Coach Jerry's Workout

I hope everyone enjoyed the spectacular weather on Saturday with a nice run.  It would have been even more enjoyable if you were racing, so sign up for some races in the coming weeks.  We train to race, so get out there and do it!  We had some more excellent performances this weekend, lead once again by David Wertz.   I'd also note the impressive 2011 debut by Kate Dart, who returned to racing after almost a seven month layoff, and who showed that she is ready to PR at every distance this year.

Practice this week is at Fort Ward, and there is no better way to simulate race day conditions than running repeats on a road loop, so I encourage you all to come out.  The workout will be 5 x 1 full loop (900 meters approximately) with a 3 minute recovery.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there tomorrow.
