Greetings NOVA Runners,
Please renew your NOVA membership ASAP or else you will be removed from the e-mails THIS MONTH! Thanks to those who have renewed already--we value your membership. We know it can be an easy thing to forget, so here's the link to renew - click it now! http://www.active.com/framed/event_detail.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&EVENT_ID=1378881 or download the form from the NOVA website here: http://www.novarun.com/2010site/2011_NOVA_membershipform-7.pdf
Congratulations to all those that participated in the 115th Boston Marathon!!! Among the NOVA members that ran it was our own Co-President Mark Drosky. Big Congrats on a running Boston, Mark!
Looking for a new trail this spring? Try the Cross County Trail that stretches the entire length, north-south for 40 miles, of Fairfax County. Grab a running buddy and go explore these scenic, back-country trails. Click here for more information and links to trail maps: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/cct/
Helpful training tips: Want to add compression sleeve or socks to your running? They can improve recovery from racing. If you are interested in using them here are some links as to how and why they work. Purchasing them from a medical store versus a running store is more economical. Although a medical supply store may not have the calf sleeve they will have athletic socks, and you can select the graduated pressure you want. Medical House (a medical supply store): 440 S Washington Street, Falls Church, VA, 22046-4414. Phone: (703) 533-2290 http://www.scienceofrunning.com/2010/07/compression-socks.html http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=13830
See you out there,

| Coach Jerry's Workout |
Gang, we had two noteworthy performance yesterday at the Pike's Peek 10k. David Wertz and Beth Young both ran huge, huge PRs, and demonstrated that they are both now squarely part of the local elite. Dave's race was truly amazing. In the coaching business we talk about athletes having breakthrough races, and while I've been in the game for over 25 years, I'm hard pressed to recall many bigger breakthroughs than Dave had yesterday. His previous PR, which itself was a major breakthrough, was 33:32. Dave absolutely destroyed that time yesterday. Indeed, Dave ran a 5k PR en route, then ran the second half faster than the first half, thereby running a second 5k PR in the second half of the race. It's not like Dave is some jogger who just took up the sport--he had already established himself as one of the better local runners in the fall, but this performance is an improvement by an order of magnitude. And the fact that Dave has done this at age 35 is nothing less than remarkable. Beth's race was almost as impressive, as she knocked over 80 seconds off her PR. Beth is gearing up for the Green Bay Marathon on May 14, and I expect that I'll be telling all of you about that race in glowing terms! The forecast for tomorrow is not particlarly promising, but let's not let the possibility of a little rain keep us from having a great practice. As I like to say it's a great night to run with NOVA no matter the weather! The workout will be 6 x 800 with a 400 jog. Try to cut them down, so that the first rep is the slowest and the last rep is the fastest. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler. See you out there!
Coach Jerry
