Issue: #2011-14April 4, 2011

Greetings NOVA Runners,

First and foremost, please renew your NOVA membership ASAP or else you will be removed from the emails THIS MONTH!  Thanks to those who have renewed already - we value your membership.  We know it can be an easy thing to forget, so here's the link to renew - click it now!  http://www.active.com/framed/event_detail.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&EVENT_ID=1378881 or download the form from the NOVA website here: http://www.novarun.com/2010site/2011_NOVA_membershipform-7.pdf

We are looking for members to help Fred Carson organize happy hours and also assist with organizing cookie runs. If your are interested, please
e-mail us.

We will have a Arlington Board member come to practice this week to present Arlington County's annual Boston Marathon proclamation. This is when Arlington County urges all citizens to recognize the hard work and dedication of the runners participating in the 115th Boston Marathon Marathon.

The Cherry Blossom Ten Miler proclaimes itself as "The Runner's Rite of Spring"®. It was indeed that today. We had the pleasure of watching many NOVA members as they approached the finish line. The cherry blossoms were out in plenty and so were the thousands of runners. It was nice to see all the hard winter training flourish on race day.

A big apology goes out to Andresa and Mike Hart, who we neglected to thank in the last newsletter for their volunteer efforts at the SunTrust half and full marathon. They both have served the club in many capacities and always have our best interests in mind. Andresa has worked in coordination with our club volunteer coordinator (Lynn Connors) to recruit and organize members prior to races as well as on race day. She has served as a point of contact for organizing NOVA volunteers for several races every year, such as the Jingle Bell Run, St. Patricks Day 8k, and the SunTrust Marathon to name just a few.  Thank you Mike and Andresa for all your help with volunteers and representing NOVA on various race committees!

See you out there,

Coach Jerry's Workout

Congratulations to everyone who ran Cherry Blossom.  We had excellent performances from Dave Wertz and Beth Young, both of whom ran huge PRs.  Beth chopped nearly 3 minutes off her previous best and placed in the top 25 overall.  Well done!  While we're on the subject of racing, I want to encourage all of you to run some races this spring.  Racing is the fun part of the sport and if you're doing the training but not racing, you're denying yourself the full experience of being a runner.  You don't have to run huge races like Cherry Blossom. From now until the end of June, there are tons of local races every weekend, and the elementary school 5k up the block from your home is a great place to start.  Those races are not real competitive and all of you would stand a chance of winning an age group award, so don't be shy.  Get out and show what you can do!

We're at Fort Ward tomorrow.  Please come out and take advantage of the chance to practice on the hilly loop at Fort Ward.  It's a beautiful setting and a beneficial complement to track work.  The workout will be 5 x 1 full loop with a 3 minute recovery.  The idea is to run based on effort, and not worry about the time.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you at Fort Ward tomorrow.
