Road Runners Club of America
Issue: #2011-5January 31, 2011

Greetings from your NOVA President,

Click the link below this paragraph to vote for new club officers for 2011.  We are over a month behind thanks to the early arrival of my twins girls born around the scheduled December election.  No worries, as club activities slow down a bit after the holidays.  Please vote just one time.  We will close the online ballot on Sunday, Feb 6.

We are cancelling track for this week.  The snow has not melted off of the track and, unlike one of our early workouts this year, the snow remains on the field, so there is no place to safely run a workout tomorrow.  Hopefully, a projected warm weather day on Wednesday will help clear the track in time for next week.

Tuesday Track Session Canceled for Feb 1, 2011
No track workout this week.  The track remains covered in snow.
Coach Jerry's Workout
Congratulations to Samathana Kirby Cole for her performance in the Houston marathon yesterday.   While the time was not what Samantha was hoping for, it's important for us all to remember that the process is as important as the result.  Samantha's prepartion for the race was outstanding.  Unfortunately there are a lot of things that can go wrong over the course of a marathon, many of which are out of the athlete's control, and there are most definitely no guarantees in this sport.  One thing the athlete can control, however, is her training, and Samantha did everything right leading up to the race.  I am extremely proud of her for laying it all on the line yesterday, and I know that she's going to run some great races in 2011 and beyond.

As much as I hate to miss a practice, there's just no way we can safely have a workout tomorrow.  And safety is the number one issue for all of you while we're waiting for the snow to melt.  At least in the area near where I live, there are many sidewalks that are not plowed, forcing pedestrians to choose between walking on ice or walking in the street.  This is a dangerous sitatuion for a runner, and I urge all of you to exercise extreme caution.  As I've said many times before, no one ever got faster laying in a hospital bed with broken bones, so please do not take any chances.  If you have any questions about how to stay fit during this period of bad weather, or any questions about anything else for that matter, give me a holler.  I hope to see you all next week.
