Issue: #2January 10, 2011

Greetings from your NOVA President,

Tomorrow's track workout MAY be canceled.  If it starts to snow in the early afternoon, the Coach and I will send an e-mail.

Following up on last week's note about cross training in the winter, I came across an interesting article in Triathlete Magazine about CrossFit training for endurance athletes.  CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that uses a technique of maxing out with high weights/low reps in a circuit style.  I haven't tried it, but you see CrossFit gyms around town these days and it looks like fun.  Amazingly, someone developed a CrossFit program for endurance athletes.  The link below shows how interval training and hard runs made them a better multi-sport athlete.  If anyone wants to be the guinea pig, let me know and we'll post your comments!  Here's the link:  http://www.triathlete-digital.com/triathlete/201102/?pg=109#pg109

Don't forget tomorrow's Hood To Coast Movie premiere.  Join Amanda at the 8:00 PM show at the AMC Hoffman 22, 206 Swamp Fox Road, Alexandria, VA, a very short walking distance from the Eisenhower Metro stop, yellow line.  Tickets are $12.50.

Runners from Pacers of Arlington are going to be at the 8:00 PM show at the Regal Ballston Commons 12.

From the web site hoodtocoastmovie.com:  "HOOD TO COAST follows four unlikely teams on their epic journey to conquer the world's largest relay race. The film captures the love, dedication, and insanity of the every day runner as well as the excitement, pain, and humor of the unprepared first timer. Their stories are reminders that no matter who you are, you can push yourself beyond where you thought your limits were."

See you soon!

Tuesday Track Session Jan 11, 2011
Our track workout this week will begin promptly at 6:30PM, pending snow, at Wakefield High School, located at 4901 S. Chesterfield Road, Arlington, VA.  Be sure to arrive 10-15 min early to warm-up properly in this cold weather.
Coach Jerry's Workout
Gang, the word to keep in mind when running in winter weather is caution.  If there is snow on the ground, unless you're certain that the route you plan to run is clear, you're far better off staying inside.  It's simply not worth the risk of taking a spill when there are other options available, like running inside on a treadmill or cross training.  And unless you're on a trail, there's also the risk of a car losing control and hitting you, which is not a path you want to explore.  That all being said, depending on how the storm moves tomorrow, we stand a reasonable chance of being able to get a practice in.  With any luck, the snow will not come until after we're done.  Assuming we can practice, the workout will be everyone's favorite, a 4-3-2-1 ladder (ie 1600-1200-800-400), all with a 400 recovery.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a shout.  I hope to see you out there tomorrow.
