Greetings from your NOVA President,

This is the final newsletter for 2010.  I want to thank everyone who helped NOVA have another great year.

2010 started tough.  We had too much snow early in the year, and then when the snow finally melted we couldn't find a track to train on.  Eventually, spring arrived and we found a regular home on our old reliable stomping grounds at T.C. Williams High School.  Unlike most summers, we only canceled one workout due to heat or thunderstorms and, by August, we had a nice run of consistent workouts and races to build for a very successful fall racing season.  Thanks to Coach Jerry for providing his leadership, wisdom and organization and making Tuesday my favorite night of the week!

Stability on Tuesday nights made for successful Pizza events at our new neighborhood hangout, Pizzaiolo Café On Fern.  Thanks to pizza regulars Carlos, Jeff and Rick, Pizza night was something to look forward to after a good workout.

We also supported several races this year as Course Marshals.  The St. Patrick's Day 8K and the Veteran's Day 10K put on by Capital Running Company went off without a hitch and helped raise money for NOVA to spend on social events, the Coach and club insurance.

Speaking of Social Events, a special thanks goes out to Mike and Andresa who hosted another Christmas Tree Run and Party from their lovely home on Capitol Hill.  This annual event is one of NOVA's best traditions and we are grateful once again to Mike and Andresa for their hospitality.

Lynn did an outstanding job organizing volunteers for races and the bi-annual W&OD trail clean up.  This year we had far more members helping out on the trail clean up.  I'm on the W&OD trail at least 2, if not 3, times a week either biking or running so I, along with many trail users, am thankful for this service.

The NOVA 5K for Community Connections also went well.  Next year, we'll try to add a couple more races in addition to trying to grow the race as we get comfortable handling a larger crowd.

Mary Johlfs deserves kudos for updating our website.  We can always use more photos and we'll be adding more features as time and energy permits.

Finally, thanks again to Board Members Andresa, Jay, Lynn and Amanda.  I am especially grateful to new Board Member and VP Amanda, who continues to infuse the club with great ideas and provides a sanity check to me or the coach before we publish any news or announcements.

Have a great 2011!!!

Coach Jerry's Workout
I encourage all of you to take a close look at our 2010 year-end performance list, which demonstrates what a great year our top runners had.  The performances speak for themselves, but I will add a couple of comments that pertain to the overall trend.  On the women's side, NOVA was very fortunate this year to add several excellent new athletes, including Kate Dart, Beth Young, Annie Scoggin, and Courtney Chapman.  Along with veteran stars Laura O'Hara, Samantha Kirby Cole, and Martha Merz, who is almost back to full fitness after recovering from major surgery, NOVA will have a truly impressive lineup in 2011 and beyond.  On the men's side, David Wertz had an amazing breakthrough in the fall of 2010.  Dave turned 35 in November, and he will be a dominant force in his new age group for years to come.  I expect both Dave and his training partner Jason Myers to not only break but shatter the elusive 16 minute barrier for 5k this spring, which has not been accomplished by a NOVA runner in many years.

There were also many excellent performances this year that did not make the list.  I greatly enjoyed seeing the progress made by the large number of Group 2 athletes who came out every week, in the heat, cold, and dark.  I feel strongly that the dedicated Group 2 athletes are the backbone of NOVA, and I can promise all of you who fit into that category that I notice what you're doing, and that I value your effort.  Keep working hard, gang, and good things will happen in 2011!

I'll see you all in January.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about training or workouts in the interim, give me a holler.
