Greetings from your NOVA Vice President,
Track is canceled until the first Tuesday in January. The conditions are not ideal at the track with the low temps and re-freezing of sections that may have had some melting. I'm sure you all could use this extra time to get ready for the holidays or to cross-train so your body may recover from a hard fall running season.
The PVTC Christmas Caper 5K/10K was this past Saturday and, while the race course was covered in ice & snow, it was a fun, low-key event with seasonal/holiday awards and hot chocolate! I didn't expect a fast time because of the conditions, but many runners were able to pull out great times! I wished I'd had a pair of YakTrax Pro with me, which are a blessing for runners. Unless you want to put screws in the bottom on your shoes, check these out to be able to keep running in snowy conditions this winter: http://www.yaktrax.com/pro (or just run on a treadmill!). I love them. Also, remember, it's best not to run in the street along busy roads and always be visible during these low-light days, if you choose to run outdoors!
Congrats to Bob Weiner for earning one of five President's Awards at the USA Track & Field's Annual Meeting. http://www.runwashington.com/news/3041/314/
Happy Holidays!

| Tuesday Track Session - CANCELED | | Track has been suspended until the first Tuesday in January. Please watch for updates in January. |
| Coach Jerry's Workout | |
Those of you who have been NOVA members for any length of time have heard me say many times that it's always best to err on the side of caution, but it's a message that can never be stressed too often. Although we only got a couple of inches of snow, and the snow came several days ago, the fact is that there is ice and snow remaining on any surface that was not cleared and does not get direct sun. The trails are slippery, and most, if not all, tracks in the area, including Wakefield, have large icy patches (hence, the cancellation of practice tomorrow). Please do not take any chances out there. It's far better to suffer through a workout in the gym on a treadmill or the exercise bike than to slip on ice and break a bone or three (anyone who wants to see bitter proof of my point should take a look at my right hand at the next practice to see what can happen when you take a bad spill). I'm not saying that you should be slacking off; to the contrary, I hope and expect that all of you will keep working hard all winter, no matter what the weather brings. But I am saying that you would be well advised to only run in areas that are completely free of ice and snow, and if no clear areas are available, to train indoors. For those of you who want to do a workout this week, feel free to contact me directly and I'll be happy to give you something that is suited to your needs. Enjoy your holidays.
Coach Jerry
