Road Runners Club of America
Issue: #49December 13, 2010

Greetings from your NOVA Vice President,

Dan is busy taking care of his wife, Barbara, and new twin baby girls, Karalynn and Kaleigh, so I will be filling in for him temporarily.  Congratulations to you and Barbara from the Club and we wish you a warm and healthy Christmas with your new little girls!

This past Thursday was the Annual NOVA Christmas Tree Run and Holiday Party hosted by NOVA members Mike and Andresa Hart.  Thank you to the Hart's for opening your home to the runners who came out to celebrate!  It was a cold night to be out running (though, I wouldn't know since I skipped the run!), but we had a great turn-out for both the run and the festivities.

Great job to Mike Naff for PR-ing this weekend in the Rehoboth Marathon!  There were excellent performances by the NOVA Racing Team in the Jingle All The Way 10K and our other members who raced this weekend.  Read more below in Coach Jerry's and the Race Results section!

Stay tuned for more information on the NOVA Board Election (which has been post-poned) and 2011 Membership renewals.

Stay warm and don't let Old Man Winter steal your running shoes,

Amanda Williams

Vice President

Tuesday Track Session
Wakefield H.S., Tuesday, 6:30 PM

We have been assured by the Arlington County Parks and Recreation Department that the Track will be open for NOVA on Tuesday.  Come out and join us at Wakefield High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start.  Wakefield is located at 4901 S Chesterfield Rd Arlington, Virginia 22206.
Coach Jerry's Workout
This was the last big weekend of racing in 2010, and we had some great performances to end the year.  The highlight was Coast Guard Mike Naff's HUGE PR of 3:02:02 in the marathon.  Mike has been working really, really hard for the past year, and he earned that breakthrough race by putting in the time and sticking to the training plan.  A PR of over 10 minutes in the marthon does not happen by accident, and Mike did everything right in preparation for the big day.  Well done!

Congratulations are also in order for Samatha Kirby Cole who was the first overall finisher in a small 5k.  Kirby is not known as a kicker, but don't tell that to the guy who she sat on and kicked down in the last 100!  We also had some excellent performances at the Jingle Bell 10k, and NOVA was led once again by Dave Wertz who finished his incredible fall season with yet another PR.  Jingle Bell also saw strong performances by our masters contingent of Derik Thomas and Lawyer Dave Kent, and a successful NOVA debut from Courtney Chapman.  Finally, I had the pleasure of seeing Gretchen Chick and ageless wonder Richard Williams at the Club Cross Country Nationals in Charlotte.  It's always great to see our far-flung flock running well in the big races.

Gang, it's going to be cold tomorrow night, but don't let that deter you from coming out.  We had a great workout last week in the cold, and I expect the same this week.  Believe me, it's a lot harder to stand in the cold holding the stopwatch than it is to run, so if I can handle the conditions, you can too!  The workout will be 3 x 1200, 3 x 400, all with a 400 jog.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there tomorrow.
Coach Jerry
