Greetings from your NOVA President,
Once again, the MCM provided great weather for spectators. My two favorite spots are Key Bridge around Mile 4 and at Route 110 before Mile 26. If you are going to watch on foot, the key is to bring a running jacket that you can peel off if you get hot, and then put back on if it gets chilly while you are standing around waiting for your favorite runner to go by. The MCM is a first class marathon and we are lucky to have it here so close to where we live.
Also congratulations are in order to all NOVA finishers of the MCM. Finishing a Marathon is a tremendous achievement, no matter if you are first or last!
Now on to official business... I will hold a brief meeting at Pizzaiolo's on Tuesday, November 2, Election Day, to discuss upcoming NOVA events including the next volunteer effort, the Veteran's Day 10K, scheduled for Sunday, November 14. Stand-by for a separate e-mail detailing the request.
Practice on Tuesday is moved up another 10 minutes to 6:10. If you are running behind, don't worry, just warm up on your own and jump in. I understand traffic heading south will prohibit some of you from arriving this early but with days getting shorter and the lack of light at TC, we really don't have a choice. This will be the last track workout at TC this Fall.
Next week, we will move Tuesday Workouts to Wakefield High School for the remainder of this year and the early part of next year. At Wakefield we will be able to train under the stadium lights. I received the calendar from the County Parks and Recreation and the track is clear for the remainder of November. The Wakefield High School Track is located at 4901 S. Chesterfield Road, Arlington, VA. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Wakefield+High+School,+Arlington,+VA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.178967,75.9375&ie=UTF8&hq=Wakefield+High+School,&hnear=Arlington,+Virginia&ll=38.848198,-77.103596&spn=0.00869,0.018539&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A
Finally, Fred is hosting a Happy Hour at Clydes on Friday, November 5. See his note below.

| Tuesday Track Session | T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:10 PM
Due to the pending darkness as we head into fall, we are starting the workouts 10 minutes earlier to ensure we have enough natural light before sunset.
Meet under the lights by the real start/finish line (side nearest the parking garage) so Coach can read your splits!
Come out and join us at T.C. Williams High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start. T.C. Williams is located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria, VA.

Gang, let's give it up for our Marine Corps marathoners. We had some excellent performances, led by our dynamic duo of Samantha Kirby Cole and Maureen "the Marine" Carr, who finished only a few seconds apart. Well done! The good news for the rest of you is that the racing season is not over by a long shot, and we've got some big races coming up, including a chance to run fast for 10k on Veterans Day and the usual smorgasbord of Thanksgiving races, so I expect to see a big crowd tomorrow for our final practice of the year at TC.
The workout will be 2 x mile, 4 x 800, all with a 400 recovery. As a reminder, with the limited light we're going to have tomorrow night, it's imperative that everyone remember your track etiquette. Be sure to run your intervals in lane 1, so that faster runner can pass to the outside. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler. See you out there tomorrow.

Sun 11/7: We are asking for your support for the National Race Against the Odds. In April 2008, Jonathan and Neely Agins' daughter Alexis was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Over two years later, Alexis continues to fight her battle against a little known, but dreadful cancer. The National Race Against the Odds Team Alexis 5K will be held at Bluemont Park November 7, 9:00AM start time. Registration, donation and volunteer opportunities are available at www.raceagainsttheodds.com. Much more work is yet to be done. Volunteers are needed to help with packet pick-up, and race day logistics. Go to http://csn.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?pg=informational&fr_id=1040&type=fr_informational&sid=1012 and let Thomas know where you can assist. Be a part of the National Race Against the Odds, and help Alexis and other children like her fight to beat the odds. Thomas G Martin tomwalksjada@yahoo.com Race Director, RRCA Certified Coach
Sun 11/14: The Veterans 10K race, 14 NOV, in West Potomac Park, D.C., will soon be upon us. The NOVA Running Club supports this race by providing the marshalls for the course. We've been participating in this event for years and it is a great opportunity to support the running community by volunteering. We need about 25 people, no kidding!!!
If you are available to give your time to this event, please contact Andresa Hart at ANDRESAH@iadb.org.
Date: SUN, 14 NOV Time: 6:30am-10:00am *Location and Rendez-vous point: the West Potomac Parking Lot "A" We will walk together to the race start point where we will get on the buses by 7:00am to move to the marshall points. At this location we will get our volunteer t-shirts and go to the restrooms.
Coffee and Donuts: I will have coffee/donuts for volunteers at the parking lot rendez-vous point. This'll give you time to sleep-in because you won't have to get up and make some!!!
The weblink is attached for you to look through. Don't volunteer through this link contact me, Dan Wallace or Amanda Williams to do so.
-Andresa Hart
The Capital Running Company hosts these two races and the NOVA Running club provides volunteers as marshalls primarily, as well as inprocessing and bag detail as required. Races need volunteers and NOVA Running club does a great job in stepping up with as many as 20 to 25 volunteers annually for each race. These events are fund-raisers for the club. The Capital Running Company pays us for our volunteer effort. As the time grows near please consider supporting these events whether as a volunteer or a runner!!! |

| Happy Hour Friday, November 5: | NOVA Happy Hour, Friday, 11/5/10, 6 PM, Clyde's Mark Center Runners and Other Friends: NOVA happy hour will be at 6 PM on Friday, November 5th, at Clyde's Mark Center. The slush fund (no club money involved) will buy the first drink for any new happy hour arrival. Topics of discussion will be Betty's race times and gridlock resulting from the recent election. Meet at the back bar (this is as far from the front door as you can possibly go) of Clyde's at the Mark Center, 1700 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, (703) 820-8300. Those who have been there know that the raw bar half-price specials on clams, oysters and shrimp are superb. (Ask for the special menu.) Other food is good too, and some more standard specials are half price until 7. (Ask for the other special menu.) The seltzer water with a twist of lime is fine. "Big-time saloon chain can still boast about its burgers; for the health conscious, the lighter entrees are a hit, too" says the Washington Post. For cyberfans, here is their URL: http://www.clydes.com/main/index.cfm DIRECTIONS: Take the Seminary Road exit from I-395. Follow the signs to go west (away from Alexandria Hospital). Take a left at the second light, which is Beauregard St. Go past the first entrance to the Mark Center on the right. Look for the Clyde's sign (somewhat obscured by foliage) on the right at the second signal after the turn, one driveway after the Mark Center entrance: 1700 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria. See you there....Fred |
