Road Runners Club of America
Issue: #43October 25, 2010

Greetings from your NOVA President,

I believe yesterday's 26th Running of the Army Ten Miler may have set a record for NOVA members competing in one event.  The ATM featured 21,636 finishers.  A race of that size creates logistic challenges like getting across the starting line or all the pomp and ceremony that required us to get lined up 15 minutes before the actual race start.  I saw quite a few of you out there on Sunday racing or on the course cheering for us, in addition to at least four NOVA members working the finish line with Potomac Runners.  Check out the race results section below to see how NOVA runners performed!

We are running out of daylight quickly so we will once again start the track workout 10 minutes early.  Be ready to go at 6:20 PM tomorrow.

NOVA Trail Clean Up a Success!

If you happen to run on the W&OD Trail between Columbia Pike and Bluemont Park you will notice that it is sparkling clean and free of debris and ready for the fall.  Thanks to the following NOVA members who contributed the semi-annual NOVA W&OD Trail Clean-up:  Adeena Emery, Amanda Williams, Antonio Eppolito, Dan Wallace, Dave Lambert, Fred Carson, Henry Grossman, Indrajit Das, Jay Duffy, Stephanie Wolf and especially Lynn Connors.  In addition to coordinating the event, Lynn conned us all into volunteering by providing Dunkin Donuts coffee, donuts, muffins and bagels.

When Do We Go to Wakefield?
That depends.  I am waiting for the county to e-mail the Schedule of Events.  In the past, we've been lucky in the fall as most team sports are ending and we only worry about lacrosse and soccer clubs on the field while we take the track for ourselves.  This week we are at TC, but in the next week or so we should know more about the transition to the track at Wakefield High School.

Lastly, send me a note or let me know if you are doing the Marine Corps Marathon.  Some of us will be on the course and it helps to know who is running so we can plan to support you through your marathon.

Tuesday Track Session
T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:20 PM

Due to the pending darkness as we head into fall, we are starting the workouts 10 minutes earlier to ensure we have enough natural light before sunset.

Come out and join us at T.C. Williams High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start.  T.C. Williams is located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria, VA.
Coach Jerry's Workout
Congratulations to our Army 10 milers--a job well done all around!  I want to give a special thumbs up to Martha Merz, who had her best performance, by far, since her return from a serious injury.  This is just the start of Martha's return to greatness.

We have another huge weekend coming up, as several of our members are running the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday.  I hope that you can all make it out to the race to cheer our gang on.

The workout for tomorrow will be 6 x 800 with a 400 jog.  Anyone who is running Marine Corps should talk to me before the workout to make sure we're on the same page.  For those of you who ran Army and feel like you're ready to do a light workout, this will fit the bill nicely.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there.

Coach Jerry

Sun 11/7:
We are asking for your support for the National Race Against the Odds. In April 2008, Jonathan and Neely Agins' daughter Alexis was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Over two years later, Alexis continues to fight her battle against a little known, but dreadful cancer. The National Race Against the Odds Team Alexis 5K will be held at Bluemont Park November 7, 9:00AM start time.  Registration, donation and volunteer opportunities are available at www.raceagainsttheodds.com. Much more work is yet to be done. Volunteers are needed to help with packet pick-up, and race day logistics.  Go to http://csn.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?pg=informational&fr_id=1040&type=fr_informational&sid=1012 and let Thomas know where you can assist. Be a part of the National Race Against the Odds, and help Alexis and other children like her fight to beat the odds.

The Capital Running Company hosts these two races and the NOVA Running club provides volunteers as marshalls primarily, as well as inprocessing and bag detail as required.  Races need volunteers and NOVA Running club does a great job in stepping up with as many as 20 to 25 volunteers annually for each race.  These events are fund-raisers for the club.  The Capital Running Company pays us for our volunteer effort.  As the time grows near please consider supporting these events whether as a volunteer or a runner!!!

Please contact Lynn Connors if you would like to volunteer for either of these 10K events: lynconn450@aol.com

In yesterday's Washington Post, this story talks about why time constraints at major road races is a good thing.  "Not everyone will finish the Marine Corps Marathon. That's what makes it a race."
