Greetings from your NOVA President,
Please join us at Pizziolo after tomorrow's track workout. I will be holding a brief meeting to discuss the fall activities we have planned and gauge interest for leadership positions on the NOVA Board.
Also note that we are starting track 10 minutes early. Be ready to go at 6:20 PM tomorrow.
Have you ever run a race that didn't feel like a race? Yesterday, I ran the 4th Annual Run Around the Lake, Run for Wounded Warriors 4.7 Mile race at Burke Lake. The beneficiary, the Wounded Warrior foundation is as noble as any, but the race itself was quirky. The race started about 10 minutes late because people were still registering. There were no pre-race speeches thanking us for coming out or a salute to the wounded warriors. The official starter didn't even say go. We were just standing around and the horn blew and off we went. Other than a few markers on the course here and there, I relied on my familiarity with the loop to ensure I didn't veer off. When it was over, there was no fanfare and everyone just kind of went home. The sponsors served Starbucks coffee, a nice touch, but that's about it.
After the race I thought I was talking to the winner but today when he checks the race results he's going to be surprised to find that he's officially third, which pushes me back a few places. Not that it really matters because there didn't appear to be an award ceremony.
Runners want to support worthwhile causes. That does impact race selection; however, race organizers are still obligated to put on a good product, especially if they are going to charge $$ to register.

| Tuesday Track Session | T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:20 PM
Due to the pending darkness as we head into fall, we are starting the workouts 10 minutes earlier to ensure we have enough natural light before sunset.
Come out and join us at T.C. Williams High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start. T.C. Williams is located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria, VA.

| Coach Jerry's Workout |
Gang, we had another great weekend of racing. Evan Jurkovich deserves special recognition for his excellent performance of 2:32:05 at the Twin Cities Marathon, which is the fastest time by a NOVA runner in years, and is more than a 9-minute PR. To knock 9 minutes off at that pace is awfully hard to do. There can only be one explanation for that kind of remarkable improvement--clearly, it's solely attributable to great coaching!
This coming Sunday is the Boo! Run for Life 10K in West Potomac Park and we have our fabled NOVA Racing team ready to kick some booty. There's still time to register for what will be a very fast race on a PR course. If you decide to run, be sure to state your team affiliation as NOVA Racing.
The weather tomorrow may not be ideal, but don't let a few raindrops scare you away, as we'll be out there working hard no matter what. The workout will be 4 x 800, 4 x 400, all with a 400 jog. Remember your track etiquette, as we'll have several groups going simultaneously. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler. See you out there.
Coach Jerry

Sun 11/7: Hello Runners, Again this year we are asking for your support for the National Race Against the Odds. In April 2008, Jonathan and Neely Agins' daughter Alexis was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Over two years later, Alexis continues to fight her battle against a little known, but dreadful cancer. The National Race Against the Odds Team Alexis 5K will be held at Bluemont Park November 7, 9:00AM start time. Registration, donation and volunteer opportunities are available at www.raceagainsttheodds.com. Our November 7 race planning has come a long way. Much more work is yet to be done. Volunteers are needed to help with packet pick-up, and race day logistics. Check out http://csn.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?pg=informational&fr_id=1040&type=fr_informational&sid=1012 and let me (Thomas) know where you can assist. Be a part of the National Race Against the Odds, and help Alexis and other children like her fight to beat the odds.
The Capital Running Company hosts these two races and the NOVA Running club provides volunteers as marshalls primarily, as well as inprocessing and bag detail as required. Races need volunteers and NOVA Running club does a great job in stepping up with as many as 20 to 25 volunteers annually for each race. These events are fund-raisers for the club. The Capital Running Company pays us for our volunteer effort. As the time grows near please consider supporting these events whether as a volunteer or a runner!!!
Please contact Lynn Connors if you would like to volunteer for either of these 10K events: lynconn450@aol.com |

Sat 10/23: Stop Modern Slavery Walk, Washington, D.C. Raise awareness and funds for local organizations combating human trafficking. Few Americans realize that approximately 17,000 foreigners and over 100,000 American kids are trafficked for labor and sex every year in the U.S. The streets of our Nation's capital are not immune. Outreach workers identify more than 50 potential victims of trafficking every month on the streets of D.C. alone. Team up with Shared Hope International and other organizations as we host a 5K Walk on the National Mall. Every dollar given to this event will benefit victims of trafficking, both domestically and internationally. Go to www.walk.stopmodernslavery.org to register in advance.
