Greetings from your NOVA President,
Here is a link about the popularity about
Half Marathons I found in the Washington Post yesterday. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/18/AR2010091802890.html The article is timely due to the overwhelming choices of Half
Marathons we have to choose from in this area. Two weeks ago we had the Virginia Beach Half Marathon, followed by last
week's the Parks Half Marathon, the WW Bridge Half Marathon, the Philadelphia
Half Marathon and a new one next month, the Heritage Half Marathon.
I like Half Marathons because of many points the author makes, the
level of satisfaction of running/racing 13.1 miles, plus the fact that Half
Marathons have become more entertaining with the Rock N Roll series, while
others like Philly have great traditions. I also use Half Marathons as training runs to work on pacing and to
build strength for future races.
We've also had great weather this month and I'm glad to see so
many of you racing and supporting the running community. See the race results section to see who PR'd
over the weekend!

Gang, what a great weekend of racing for NOVA! Our soon-to-be legendary Racing Team dominated the Run Geek Run 8K, and we had excellent performances from Laura O'Hara and Matt Logan at the half marathon distance, running the fastest times by NOVA runners in many years (and in Laura's case, possibly ever). But among all of the outstanding running this weekend, I'd like to single out David Wertz, who ran a huge PR of 26:40 for 8K. Dave had the kind of breakthrough on Saturday that most runners can only dream about. To put his race into perspective, a year ago Dave's 5K PR was in the 5:35 per mile range. On Saturday, Dave ran 5:22 per mile for 8K. That is a remarkable improvement, and Dave's season is just gettting started. In fact, Dave is going to lead the NOVA Racing Team back into action on October 10 in the Boo! Run for Life 10K in West Potomac Park, and we will have several of our other A group runners in the field as well, so I urge all of you to consider joining them for what will undoubtedly be a very fast and competitive race, and another crushing victory for NOVA. The workout for tomorrow will be 12 x 400 with a 200 jog. For those of you who have not done this workout before, it can be a tad tricky from a logistical perpsective, so I need everyone to understand the ground rules, which you all MUST abide by. As always, you will run your intervals in lane 1, so that faster runners can pass on the outside. For your recovery, you will jog the turn in lane 4, turn around and jog back in lane 5. But it is imperative that BEFORE YOU MOVE OUTSIDE FOR YOUR JOG, MAKE SURE NO FASTER RUNNERS ARE PASSING ON THE OUTSIDE. Our A group runners will be doing a longer workout, and they will not necessarily be stopping at the finish line. If eveyone follows these simple rules, we will get through this workout without incident. Please, I urge you to be careful. If you have any questions or concerns, give me a shout. See you out there tomorrow.
Coach Jerry

Sun 11/7: Hello Runners, Again this year we are asking for your support for the National Race Against the Odds. In April 2008, Jonathan and Neely Agins' daughter Alexis was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Over two years later, Alexis continues to fight her battle against a little known, but dreadful cancer. The National Race Against the Odds Team Alexis 5K will be held at Bluemont Park November 7, 9:00AM start time. Registration, donation and volunteer opportunities are available at www.raceagainsttheodds.com. Our November 7 race planning has come a long way. Much more work is yet to be done. Volunteers are needed to help with packet pick-up, and race day logistics. Check out http://csn.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?pg=informational&fr_id=1040&type=fr_informational&sid=1012 and let me know where you can assist. Be a part of the National Race Against the Odds, and help Alexis and other children like her fight to beat the odds.
The Capital Running Company hosts these two races and the NOVA Running club provides volunteers as marshalls primarily, as well as inprocessing and bag detail as required. Races need volunteers and NOVA Running club does a great job in stepping up with as many as 20 to 25 volunteers annually for each race. These events are fund-raisers for the club. The Capital Running Company pays us for our volunteer effort. As the time grows near please consider supporting these events whether as a volunteer or a runner!!!
Please contact Lynn Connors if you would like to volunteer for either of these events: lynconn450@aol.com |

How to fuel up for fall races? Carbo-loading, though popular, seems ineffective. Balance may be a better course.

Sat 10/23: Stop Modern Slavery Walk, Washington, D.C. Raise awareness and funds for local organizations combating human trafficking. Few Americans realize that approximately 17,000 foreigners and over 100,000 American kids are trafficked for labor and sex every year in the U.S. The streets of our Nation's capital are not immune. Outreach workers identify more than 50 potential victims of trafficking every month on the streets of D.C. alone. Team up with Shared Hope International and other organizations as we host a 5K Walk on the National Mall. Every dollar given to this event will benefit victims of trafficking, both domestically and internationally. Go to www.walk.stopmodernslavery.org to register in advance. Contact Elizabeth for more info: Elizabeth@sharedhope.org
