Greetings from your NOVA President,
One of the hottest summers on record concludes next week but not before taking one more shot at us on Tuesday. Actually, I'm used to the heat by now, but it's always nice to have a reprieve from the heat for a more enjoyable run and faster times.
The good news, along with cooler September weather, is that the racing season really takes off in the next month. If you've trained through these last three months you will see a big difference in your efforts. We are lucky to live in an area with so many quality and various types of races. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity.

| Tuesday Track Session | T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:30 PM
Come out and join us at T.C. Williams High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start. T.C. Williams is located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria, VA. |
| Coach Jerry's Workout |
Gang, fall is just about here and it's time to start our preparation for the fall racing season in earnest, which means an emphasis on longer workouts as we get our members ready for long races like Army 10 and the Marine Corps Marathon. However, the weather is not going to cooperate this week, as it's going to be quite hot on Tuesday. Because of the heat, we need to stick to short intervals for at least one more week. The workout will be 4 x 800, 4 x 400, all with a 400 jog. As always, if you have any questions give me a holler. See you out there on Tuesday.
Coach Jerry

| NOVA Volunteer Events | |
The Capital Running Company hosts these two races and the NOVA Running club provides volunteers as marshalls primarily, as well as inprocessing and bag detail as required. Races need volunteers and NOVA Running club does a great job in stepping up with as many as 20 to 25 volunteers annually for each race. These events are fund-raisers for the club. The Capital Running Company pays us for our volunteer effort. As the time grows near please consider supporting these events whether as a volunteer or a runner!!!
Please contact Lynn Connors if you would like to volunteer for either of these events: lynconn450@aol.com |
| Feature Article - Technical Gear Stink |
How to Wash Your Running Clothes, 101
Technical fabrics are great for running because they wick away your sweat but, unfortunately, bacteria (which causes the smell) gets trapped in the fibers and can be hard to get out. After a long, hot summer, you may be considering tossing some of your technical gear, but don't give up on them yet. Here are a couple of tricks from About.com that work:
1. Using baking soda helps. Pre-soak your clothes in a solution of water and Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (or just use water and a cup of baking soda). You can use the pre-soak setting on the washing machine or do it in a separate container. Then wash and use Arm and Hammer laundry detergent.
2. Try using a special detergent formulated for technical wear, such as WIN High Performance Sport Detergent. Those types of detergents will remove the odor, but won't degrade sweat-wicking or water-repellent properties.
3. Plain white vinegar is an inexpensive and cheap odor remover. Soak your running clothes in a cup or two of vinegar mixed with plain water. Then wash as usual. Or, pour 1/4 to 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the wash (along with your regular detergent). 4. There are also lots of new odor-fighting running clothes on the market. They may sound too good to be true, but these running clothes do actually help keep you dry and odor-free. Although some of them are more expensive than your average running shirts, they're worth the investment because they'll last longer and keep you smelling fresh.
