Road Runners Club of America
Issue: # 32August 9, 2010
Greetings from your NOVA President,
Save the Date!  On Thursday, August 19, at 6:30 PM, NOVA will host a Summer 5K to benefit Community Connections, http://www.communityconnectionsdc.org/, the largest not-for-profit mental health agency serving men, women and children in the nation's capital.  The race will be held at Bluemont Park but we are meeting at the shelter area off of 4th and Manchester, rather than the pavilion off of Wilson and Manchester.  If you are interested in running or volunteering let me or Samantha (Sam@tecole.com) know.  More details to follow.

Yesterday, a number of NOVA members competed in the Leesburg 10K/20K.  With mild summer temperatures it was an ideal day to test our summer training.  While the course measured short I was surprised how many NOVA and other local runners performed well on what was a hilly course.  The best part, besides the finish of course, was the cold, wet towels that they gave to each finisher.  Potomac River Running and Capital Running Company, as well as the town of Leesburg and the local law enforcement combined to organize a first class summer race. So if you missed this one this year, I highly recommend it for next year!

Tuesday Track Session
T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:30 PM

Coach Jerry's Workout
Let's give it up for the NOVA Racing Team--we had some great performances again this weekend.  Leesburg was the last big race of the summer, and we're now transitioning from summer racing to fall racing.  The next few weeks we're going to work on increasing our base mileage for the long races to come.  I had hoped to be able to do long intervals tomorrow, but it's going to be too hot for that, so we'll make do by doing another set of 6 x 800 with a 400 jog.  I don't like to repeat workouts from one week to the next but the heat is forcing us to adapt our plans.  Speaking of the heat, be sure to fully hydrate throughout the day tomorrow.

Also, while it was great to have the track to ourselves last week, I don't think we're going to be so lucky this week, so everyone must obey the rules of the track.  Remember, it's imperative that everyone run intervals in lane one, as close to the rail as possible, so faster runners can pass on the outside.  Do not move outside for your jog between intervals until you've made certain no one is trying to pass. If we can follow these simple rules, we can have another great night at TC.  If you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there tomorrow.
