Greetings from your NOVA President,
Congratulations to the NOVA Racing Team lead by Team Captain Samantha
Cole. The NOVA team finished 3rd
out of 19 teams entered in the prestigious and competitive DARCARS Rockville
Rotary Twilight 8K!
Also good luck to Bob Weiner and Dan Weiser who are competing in the
National Masters Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, CA this weekend. Here's the press release: July 20, 2010: USA Track & Field National Masters Outdoor
Championships July 22-25 at Sacramento State University CA to Feature 12
Olympians, 113 Current World Champions Among 1400" Read more here: http://www.weinerpublic.com/20100712.pdf
The latest Washington Running Report arrived in my mailbox this weekend
and I was pleased to find so many NOVA members listed in the ranks. See the race results section for more.
Finally, another farewell, for Martha Merz; Long a favorite of NOVA members, Maratha is
moving with her family to Connecticut for her husband's next assignment. Martha will come down to D.C. from time to
time for some of the big races so we'll look for you on the roads. Hopefully the Navy returns her to the area in
just a few years. Good luck to both of
you Martha! Dan Wallace President dan_wallace65@hotmail.com |
| Tuesday Track Session | T.C. Williams H.S., Tuesday, 6:30 PM
Come out and join us at T.C. Williams High School for our Tuesday track workout. Try to get there about 15 minutes early so you can warm up and stretch before we start. T.C. Williams is located at 3330 King Street, Alexandria, VA. |
| Coach Jerry's Workout |
Gang, it's going to be HOT again tomorrow so please be sure to hydrate
throughout the day. The workout will be 10 x 400 with a 200 jog, which
is appropriate for the heat. To insure we can do this workout without
incident, please be cognizant of others on the track. Those of you who
were out there last week know that it was very crowded, and i'd expect
that will be the case for the rest of the summer.
Remember these
cardinal rules: during your intervals, stay INSIDE, as close to the
rail as possible, so faster runners can pass on the outside. During
your recovery jog, move out to lane 3 for the jog around the curve, and
use lane 4 for the jog back to the starting line. Also, please remember
that we are guests at TC Williams, and we have no greater right to use
it than anyone else (and in the case of the high school kids, we
have much less right to be there than they do). Please be
courteous towards all other users, even if they are not courteous
towards you.
Coach Jerry

| Thursday Night Tempo Runs | Bluemont Park
Join the gang for a 6 mile run starting with at a 7:30-8:00 minute pace for the first three miles and 6:30 to 6:00 minutes for the second three miles. We start at 6:00 PM sharp!
We also want to start a second Thursday night group that runs a bit slower pace at Bluemont or some other location. So far we've had one offer for Bluemont Park and one for Belle Haven. Let me know what works for you. |
| Weekday Runs | With Dr. Fred Carson
Esteemed NOVA member, Fred Carson hosts weekday runs or rides usually in the vicinity of the C&O canal. If you are interested in joining Fred for a weekday morning runs on dirt and/or a weekday bike ride, contact Fred at fcarson@american.edu. |
| Feature Article: Sun Protection |
We're in the height of summer now and it's important to remember to take safety precautions while in the sun at any hour of the day. Even a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will allow you to stay out 15 times longer than you normally would without any sunscreen at all. So, if you start to get red after being in the sun for 10 minutes, an SPF 15 (supposedly) lets you stay out for 150 min. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/8-Sun-Safety-Tips-for-Your-Summer-Run.htm |
