Road Runners Club of America
Issue: # 23June 7, 2010
Greetings from your NOVA President,
I hope everyone survived the weekend!  It was pretty brutal for early June.  I had two running related events occur this weekend that I'll share.  On Saturday, I was at Pacer's in Clarendon and had a chance to chat with Michael Wardian, a homegrown, long distance talent.  He recently returned from South Africa where he was the first American, and 26th overall in the Comrades Marathon (it's actually 564 miles but they still call it a marathon).  He showed me his splits, almost all under or around 6 minute pace until the end where he ran into some hills.  He hasn't changed a bit since I first met him and is a genuine nice guy.

On Sunday I was on the C&O canal when I came upon a water stop near Fletcher's Boathouse provided by the Georgetown Running Company.  It was welcome relief to have water and Gatorade on a blistering hot run.  I'm old school and still don't carry my own water on long runs but I think I'm ready to break that habit.  As a reward for their kindness, I told them I would mention their next race in our weekly newsletter.  They are sponsoring a Father's Day 8K on Sunday June 20th.  Here's the link to their website:

Coach Jerry's Workout
Gang, we're going to have a perfect night to run tomorrow, so I expect a huge turnout.  We're going to take advantage of the cool weather by doing some longer intervals, so the workout will be 2 x mile, 2 x 800, all with a 400 jog.  You'll want to make sure to run this and every workout in the next few weeks in order to be ready to race at the Rockville Twilight 8k on July 17, where we're going to enter a NOVA team.  That's right, gang, the soon-to-be-legendary NOVA Racing Team is going to swing back into action after its crushing victory at the Capital Hill 10k, and you're all invited to join the fun.  Our fastest five finishers will score in the team competition, but the number of team members is unlimited, so I strongly encourage all of you to run and be part of what is sure to be another great performance by our elite runners.  As an added bonus, there is a party after the race at which I expect NOVA will be well represented (not that any of you would care about such a thing).  Dan and I will let you know in the coming weeks about the specifics, but I encourage all of you to mark your calenders for July 17.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there tomorrow.

Coach Jerry
