Greetings from your NOVA President,
This is the final week before the kickoff of summer. With that theme in mind we should be finalizing our summer training plans. We've had a mild to chilly May, but we know the heat is coming. With warmer temperatures coming we'll want to spend more time outdoors and more time training. Make sure you prepare for the heat properly by hydrating throughout the day and applying sunscreen before those long runs or rides that we like to do in the summer months. | Coach Jerry's Workout |
Gang, this is the time of year to make a commitment to your running. The weather is good, we have the track to ourselves, and we've got a critical mass of runners out there waiting for you to join them. The time for excuses is over, and the time to come to practice is here! To sweeten the pot even further, tomorrow's workout will be everyone's favorite, a 4-3-2-1 cutdown, meaning 1600-1200-800-400, all with a 400 jog. We don't do this too often, so don't miss your chance. As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler. See you out there.
Coach Jerry

| Thursday Night Tempo Runs | Bluemont Park
This Thursday, May 27th, we will hold our first tempo run of the year. Last year the regular Thursday night crew averaged about a 7:30-8:00 minute pace for the first three miles and 6:30 to 6:00 minutes for the second three miles. We start at 6:00 PM sharp!
We also want to start a second Thursday night group that runs a bit slower pace at Bluemont or some other location. So far we've had one offer for Bluemont Park and one for Belle Haven. Let me know what works for you. |

Esteemed NOVA member, Fred Carson hosts weekday runs or rides usually in the vicinity of the C&O canal. If you are interested in joining Fred for a weekday morning runs on dirt and/or a weekday bike ride, contact Fred at fcarson@american.edu. |

Colonel Mosher has been speaking out about ways to push through the stress of deployments, injuries, wounds and other personal problems. He is an avid runner from the Maine National Guard and has suffered personal setbacks. He fought through them and lectures others on combating stress and winning. He uses distance running and marathons as an example. A marathon race is run as an individual effort, but it requires the assistance of many people; a marathon runner cannot finish the race by his or her self. They have to have the assistance of others in the beginning, during the race and at the end. Sun 6/6: Springfield Days 15K / 5K.
