Road Runners Club of America
Issue: # 17April 26, 2010
Greetings from your NOVA President,
This week we are meeting on Tuesday at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria.  This is the final workout, we hope, at Fort Ward before moving to T.C. Williams for the rest of the spring and summer.  Between the record snowfall in the winter and the high school soccer and lacrosse games it's been hard to build consistency in our running programs.  I am certain that after this week, we will get back to our old routines.

In the spirit of Earth Day, we are having our first shoe collection of the year on Tuesday, so bring your old running shoes to Fort Ward where they can be donated to those in need.  The collection benefits A-SPAN, the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network, http://www.a-span.org/.

We put a survey in the last email. Please take a moment and fill it out. Here's the link for it: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e2thqmkeg79d2rfg/start It only takes about 5 minutes to complete. It is important that we gauge what activities NOVA members are interested in. We know we like to run, but we also like to socialize and participate in volunteer events.  This is your chance to let us know what you want to do!

Shoe Collection THIS TUESDAY
Bring your old shoes to Ft. Ward on Tuesday!
We are collecting running shoes to donate to A-Span, a small charity based in Arlington that provides life-sustaining services for Arlington's street homeless. Their mission is to secure permanent housing for one of Arlington's most vulnerable populations through outreach and relationships built on trust and respect. Read more about their collection program here: http://www.a-span.org/donation.html

Tuesday Ft. Ward Track Session
Track Session at Fort Ward Park, Tuesday, 6:30 PM
The coach and I will be at Fort Ward Tuesday.  Thanks to Berni for coordinating last week's workout!  The address is 4301 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22304.
Coach Jerry's Workout
We had more great racing results this weekend, so congratulations to all of you who competed.  I want to give another special shout-out to David Wertz.  Dave's time of 34:51 is particularly remarkable in light of the fact that last year at this time, his 5K PR was 17:20, so in one year Dave has improved to the point that he can now run a 10K at the same pace he was able to run a 5K.  Dave's example demonstrates that hard work and persistance pays off.

For tomorrow, we'll do 6 x 800 at Fort Ward with a 3:00 recovery.  I encourage all of you to attend.  Fort Ward is a great place to run and a little variety in training is a positive thing, so take advantage of the chance to do some off-track intervals.  As always, if you have any questions, give me a holler.  See you out there.

Coach Jerry
