Greetings from your NOVA President,
By the time this email gets out, the Boston Marathon winner has been determined. Hopefully, some, if not all, of you had a chance to track the race via the internet. Last Wednesday at Wakefield High School NOVA had the annual Arlington Boston Marathon Proclamation read to us by Helen White of the Arlington Parks and Recreation Office. This year about 90 Arlington residents entered in the Boston Marathon, probably the world's most famous marathon. The Arlington-Alexandria area is home to a large number of competitive open and age group runners and we are lucky to have so many represent our community in the Boston Marathon. Once again, we are forced to play track roulette. Here is this week's schedule: Tuesday, Fort Ward, 6:30 PM Wednesday, TC Williams, 6:30 PM Look for Berni on Tuesday at Fort Ward and the Coach on Wednesday at T.C. Next week, we are back to our exclusive Tuesday schedule, but will meet at Fort Ward due to lack of track availability. Then, finally in May, we are Tuesday's at TC for the rest of the spring, summer and early fall! Yay!
We put a survey in the last email. Please take a moment and fill it out. Here's the link for it: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e2thqmkeg79d2rfg/start It only takes about 5 minutes to complete. It is important that we gauge what activities NOVA members are interested in. We know we like to run, but we also like to socialize and participate in volunteer events. This is your chance to let us know what you want to do!

| Coach Jerry's Workout |
Let's give it up for Laura O'Hara, who ran 2:54:35 in Boston today. Well done! Laura is only about 70 percent fit, and I can promise you that she is going to run much, much faster this fall after spending the summer training with us at TC. Laura is fully committed to qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Trials, and I am 100 percent confident that she will do it in her next marathon. One of the great things about NOVA is that we have national-class runners like Laura working out with us, and that allows everyone to see the level of dedication that is necessary to acheive true excellence. I hope that Laura's shining example serves as an inspiration to all of you. Now that you're sufficiently fired up, the workout on Tuesday at Fort Ward is 5 x 800 with a 3min recovery. Berni will be coordinating this workout at Ft Ward, so look for her there.
The workout for Wednesday at TC Williams HS will be 2 x 1200, 2 x 800, 2 x 400, all with a 400 jog. The idea is to run harder as the distance gets shorter.
Any questions, give me a holler. See you out there.
Coach Jerry

Mon 5/31: Warrior Run. Join the One Life Warrior Organization's Resiliency Run ( http://www.onelifewarrior.org/resiliency-run-2010/) on the final leg of this 21 days/21 marathons event at the Arlington National Cemetary. Contact Ms. Casey Olson for more information and to participate: 703-607-9727, Casey.Olson@us.army.mil. The Army is fighting a difficult battle with a significant increase in suicides. Colonel Mosher has been speaking out about ways to push through the stress of deployments, injuries, wounds and other personal problems. He is an avid runner from the Maine National Guard and has suffered personal setbacks. He fought through them and lectures others on combatting stress and winning. He uses distance running and marathons as an example. His example is that a marathon race is run as an individual effort but it requires the assistance of many people. A marathon runner cannot finish the race by his or her self. They have to have the assistance of others in the beginning, during the race and at the end.
Sat 6/19: Charity Run & Volunteer Event! Josh and Betsy Caldwell (NOVA members) and are putting on a race (along with a great deal of help and guidance from Jay Wind) to benefit Mary Payton's Miracle, a charity devoted to raising money to pay for life saving treatments for children afflicted with LINCL and Batten's disease. The event is June 19th on the brand new Indian Head Rail Trail in Indian Head, MD. The race is a 5K/8K challenge race. In effect, racers can sign up to race the 5K (7:30AM Start), the 8K (8:30AM Start) or take the challenge and race both one after the other! It's unlike another race out there that we're aware of! They are looking for runners, volunteers and sponsors. Race registration through Active.com is set up already: http://www.active.com/running/indian-head-md/run-for-mps-miracle-5k8k-challenge-2010. Anyone interested in sponsoring should contact Josh Caldwell at pchemdork@gmail.com.
