Road Runners Club of America
Issue: # 15April 12, 2010
Greetings from your NOVA President,
There were some outstanding performances from NOVA members in Sunday's Cherry Blossom 10 Miler.  If you were running or cheering it was an inspirational day for runners.  I hung around the finish line and got to see the two all time greats, Bill Rodgers and Joan Benoit Samuelson.  See the results section for NOVA members running.

I have heard from some NOVA members that the Wednesday's are hard to make.  Moving forward, we will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday for the next two weeks.  Please note the locations.  Here is the new schedule:
Tuesday, April 13, Fort Ward Park, 6:30 PM
Wednesday, April 14, Wakefield High School, 6:30 PM

Tuesday, April 20, Fort Ward Park, 6:30 PM
Wednesday, April 21, TC Williams High School, 6:30 PM

For those attending the Wednesday, April 14th workout at Wakefield, Jay Wind will be in attendance reading the Arlington County Boston Marathon Proclamation. We'll start at 6:25 so get to the track about 5 minutes early.

In May, we will be back to TC Williams, which has a clear calendar for us for the remainder of the spring and summer. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we try to find places to train while competing with the high schools for track space.

We put a survey in the last email. Please take a moment and fill it out. Here's the link for it: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e2thqmkeg79d2rfg/start It only takes about 5 minutes to complete. It is important that we gauge what activities NOVA members are interested in. We know we like to run, but we also like to socialize and participate in volunteer events.  This is your chance to let us know what you want to do!

In lieu of a feature article this week, the minutes from the NOVA Board meeting held yesterday at Sine's in Arlington are included in this email. Please take a minute to read.

Tues AND Wed Track Sessions
Track Session at Fort Ward Park, Tuesday, 6:30 PM

This should be our final Wakefield workout of the season.  Watch out for young Lax players!  The address of Wakefield HS is 4901 S. Chesterfield Road, Arlington, VA.
Coach Jerry's Workout
Hey gang, congratulations to all of you who ran Cherry Blossom.  We had several superb performances, but I want to single out for a big NOVA mazel tov "Fast Dave" Wertz, who ran a PR by almost 90 seconds.  Making that kind of improvement at that high of a level is very hard to do, so let's all give it up for Dave.

We're going to have two workouts again this week to accommodate both those who have arranged their schedules to allow them to come out on Tuesday, and those who are more flexible and want to work out on the track on Wednesday. We'll get back to the Tuesday track work as soon as the facility schedules permit, but for now, this is a good approach.

Tuesday, at Fort Ward, the workout is 4 x 800 with a 3 minute recovery.  I'm keeping it to 4 because Fort Ward is a difficult course, and I want to make sure that no one pushes too hard so soon after Cherry Blossom.

On Wednesday at the track, we'll do 6 x 800 with a 400 recovery.

Please remember to observe proper track etiquette.  In particular, remember to do your intervals in lane 1.  I've noticed several of the group 2 folks running in lane 2.  Please do not do that--the faster runners will pass on the outside, so you'll help everyone by staying in lane 1, as far inside as possible, during the interval.  On your recovery jogs, move out, carefully, to lane 4.  And be mindful of other, non-NOVA people, on the track.  A little bit of courtesy goes a long way.

Any questions, give me a holler.

Coach Jerry

Send Dan an email if you are interested in joining the guys for the Thursday night Tempo Runs at Bluemont Park.  We haven't met yet, but if we can get a couple of guys to commit to showing up every week, we'll start meeting officially.  A women's running group e-mail list is in development.
Weekday Runs

With Dr. Fred Carson
Esteemed NOVA member, Fred Carson hosts weekday runs or rides usually in the vicinity of the C&O canal.  If you are interested in joining Fred for a weekday morning runs on dirt and/or a weekday bike ride, contact Fred at fcarson@american.edu.
Board Meeting Minutes 4/11

Attendees:
Dan Wallace - President
Jay Duffy - Treasurer
Amanda Williams - Newsletter/e-mails

Not in attendance but provided comments prior to meeting
Lynn Connors - Volunteer Organizer
Andresa Padden - Membership
Mary Johlfs - Web page

Track Workouts:
We are going to have two track workouts for the next two weeks due to demand to meet on Tuesday by some NOVA members.  Tuesday's will be at Fort Ward, and Wednesdays at either Wakefield or TC Williams.

Tempo Runs:
Will resume for the 7 minute group in late May at Bluemont Park.  Looking for someone to organize a second group, preferably female to run at 8-9 minute pace.  Does not have to be Bluemont Park.

Saturday Long Runs:
NOVA has tried unsuccessfully to organize a Saturday Long run.  We are welcome to any ideas.

Volunteer Events:
Next event is the W&OD Trail Clean up scheduled for May 15.

Finance:
Treasurer Jay Duffy provided his financial report.  He stated that finances are looking good and provided his statements that the board went through, line by line.  If anyone has any questions about NOVA finances, let me and Jay know and we'll go through them with you.

Race Services:
NOVA wants to put on a 5K this summer. We are studying courses at Fort Hunt, Burke Lake and Bluemont Park. If you are a NOVA member and have a charity that you would like to support, let us know, and NOVA can provide race support for you.

Social Events:
Due to the snow, and inconsistent track workouts and shifting locations, the social side of NOVA has suffered. When we return to TC Williams for Tuesday track, we will resume a weekly post track social hour at a local pub or restaurant. We are also planning a summer picnic/barbeque and a NOVA new member happy hour. Stand-by for more information.

Unfulfilled Board Positions:
We do not have a Vice-President, but Amanda Williams was nominated by me. We are also seeking a secretary and a social chairman. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Web Page:
Mary requested that Board members send her an updated bio and a recent picture for the web page.

The Next meeting is scheduled for May 15, after the WO&D clean up.

The Army is fighting a difficult battle with a significant increase in suicides.  Colonel Mosher has been speaking out about ways to push through the stress of deployments, injuries, wounds and other personal problems.  He is an avid runner from the Maine National Guard and has suffered personal setbacks.  He fought through them and lectures others on combatting stress and winning.  He uses distance running and marathons as an example.  His example is that a marathon race is run as an individual effort but it requires the assistance of many people.  A marathon runner cannot finish the race by his or her self.  They have to have the assistance of others in the beginning, during the race and at the end.

Sat 6/19: Charity Run.  Josh and Betsy Caldwell (NOVA members) and are putting on a race (along with a great deal of help and guidance from Jay Wind) to benefit Mary Payton's Miracle, a charity devoted to raising money to pay for life saving treatments for children afflicted with LINCL and Batten's disease.  The event is June 19th on the brand new Indian Head Rail Trail in Indian Head, MD.  The race is a 5K/8K challenge race.  In effect, racers can sign up to race the 5K (7:30AM Start), the 8K (8:30AM Start) or take the challenge and race both one after the other!  It's unlike another race out there that we're aware of!  They are looking for runners, volunteers and sponsors.  Race registration through Active.com is set up already: http://www.active.com/running/indian-head-md/run-for-mps-miracle-5k8k-challenge-2010.  Anyone interested in sponsoring should contact Josh Caldwell at pchemdork@gmail.com.
