Road Runners Club of America
Issue: # 12 March 22, 2010
Greetings from your NOVA President,

Special thanks goes out to Fred Carson, Matt Wade, Andresa and Mike Hart for volunteering for Saturday's National Marathon and Half Marathon.  Giving back to the race community is one of our missions and, hopefully, everyone will have a chance to volunteer again this year!

We are returning to Wakefield High School for this week's track workout, but we will meet on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.  The Coach and I decided that Wednesday Track is better than Tuesday's at Fort Ward, especially on consecutive weeks.  I heard that the dogs in the park made the workout eventful, as well!  We know that this screws up everyone's fitness routine, but for the next five weeks we have to be flexible if we want to find a track and get a quality workout.

Dogfish Head Rehoboth, Gaithersburg and Falls Church are three of my favorites. They brew their own beer in Milton, DE. The slush fund (no club money involved) is in good shape, so the usual offer applies:
we will buy a free drink for any new happy hour attendee. Their happy hour has:

* $1.50 Off all Drafts
* $1.00 Off all Dogtails, Dogtinis, and Bottled Beer
* Wine $1.00 off

$2.00 Off Select Appetizers! Choose from:

DIRECTIONS to Dogfish Head: By car from the Beltway, I-495, take Exit 47B, Route 7/Leesburg Pike East to Falls Church, and go about 5 miles to the Seven Corners Shopping Center. When you see the big Ford agency sign on your left at about 4.2 miles, keep right and go about 1/4 mile to the Dogfish Head sign at 6363 Leesburg Pike (route 7) on the left, directly across from Sears. This is roughly at the intersections of Rte. 50 (Arlington Blvd.), Rte. 7 (Leesburg Pike) and E. Broad St.

ALTERNATIVE DIRECTIONS 1: By car from Key Bridge, go to the third traffic light in VA, and turn right up the steep hill to Wilson Blvd. Go about 2.4 miles west toward N Taylor St. Take a slight right at
Arlington Blvd. for 1/4 mile. Turn left at Leesburg Pike/VA-7 E and go 1/4 mile to 6363 Leesburg Pike in Seven Corners Shopping Center, which is roughly at the intersections of Rte. 50 (Arlington Blvd.), Rte. 7
(Leesburg Pike) and E. Broad St.

ALTERNATIVE DIRECTIONS 2: From Arlington heading west on Route 50, take the Route 7 exit and go 800 feet to take the Route 7 East left turn. Keep left 100 feet to the Leesburg Pike exit and proceed 500 feet to the Seven Corners Shopping Center on the left. (Traffic tends to back up.)
See You There....Fred

Going Too Hard, Too Soon
We're all stoked for the recent nice weather and the start of spring this past weekend, but if you try to make up for Snowmageddon's halt to your pre-spring training, you might be in for some pain.  It's essential to re-build your base and get used to running on streets again, especially after a winter of indoor treadmill training or other cross training.  Active.com has a great article about how to avoid overuse injuries this spring.  It's a quick read, with some helpful tips: http://www.active.com/running/Articles/4-Ways-to-Avoid-Overuse-Injuries-This-Spring.htm. Make sure not to overdo yourself this spring, so hopefully you can enjoy some races, NOVA group workout sessions or just good running throughout the coming months!

Upcoming Local Races
Sat 4/17: The Capital Hospice 12K, originally scheduled for February 6th, will now be held April 17th. Link to the race website: http://www.dcroadrunners.org/sign-up/custis-12k.html?view=Events  James Scarborough has the forms to register, so please try to register ahead of time: jbs1968@comcast.net.  There will also be pre-race packet pickup the evening before, from 4-6PM approximately.

Sat 6/19: Josh and Betsy Caldwell (NOVA members) and are putting on a race (along with a great deal of help and guidance from Jay Wind) to benefit Mary Payton's Miracle, a charity devoted to raising money to pay for life saving treatments for children afflicted with LINCL and Batten's disease.

The event is June 19th on the brand new Indian Head Rail Trail in Indian Head, MD.  The race is a 5K/8K challenge race.  In effect, racers can sign up to race the 5K (7:30AM Start), the 8K (8:30AM Start) or take the challenge and race both one after the other!  It's unlike another race out there that we're aware of!  They are looking for runners, volunteers and sponsors.  Race registration through Active.com is set up already: http://www.active.com/running/indian-head-md/run-for-mps-miracle-5k8k-challenge-2010

Anyone interested in sponsoring should contact Josh Caldwell at pchemdork@gmail.com.
