HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY RECRUIT TOP TECH TALENT

By Logan Knight, Executive Recruiter, IT Division, Redfish Technology

Logan Knight
Logan Knight

We've all heard about the competition for top tech talent. Despite the Great Recession and the limp recovery, unemployment is very low for technical professionals in software, IT, and high tech. Hot spots like the San Francisco Bay area, New York, Seattle, So Cal, DC, Boston, etc. are thriving and the technology sectors growing. How do hiring managers successfully hire the technical talent they need in this labor market?

If you've tried recruiting top software development talent lately, you know that the demand is there. And the talent is too, you just need to find the right peeps. As a hiring manager you need to have a perpetual pipeline of talent or a funnel from trusted sources. This allows you to jump on exceptional folks (not literally of course) or quickly access them when the need arises.

Competing for skilled and experienced software developers and engineers isn't really rocket science. It is about your network, communication and people skills, and the work of course! If your work in uninteresting, unchallenging, inconsequential, or if you are in a downwardly mobile company, well go do something else, frankly. But if you are part of an exciting company, tell the world. Keep that pipeline filled with potential collaborators via your professional and social networks, via industry associations, via your recruiter pals in the sector.

Job Openings August 2012
Technology Jobs hiring took a vacation in the spring but not this summer! According to SimplyHired, there were about 142,000 technology job openings in August. As people and companies ready to close out the summer and enjoy the Labor day holiday, folks have a lot of balls in the air. That said, it is ramp up time in many industries and we expect to see a very strong September.

HIRING HURRICANE
5 Tips for Managing the Urgent Hire

The tech sector is fast paced and always evolving. Hiring in such an environment can be fast and furious when the sales season is ramping up, the project deadlines are set, new releases are ramping up. The hiring process when done with urgency can feel like a hurricane. How do you hire talent in a fast paced environment without succumbing to the storm?

Here are 5 tips for managing the hiring process when urgency has taken hold:

1. Be prepared. Know what you need, what you want, and how to articulate that to those involved in the hiring process. HR can be much more agile if they have clear instructions. Sourcing becomes more streamlined when the role and profile are clearly specified. Articulate your needs once, and move on to the next step.

2. Be agile. If you needed to onboard your new account executive, marketing director, product manager, or mechanical engineer yesterday, then get out your calendar (and the team's calendar) and make a plan. Share the calendar with your recruiting partners, and delegate. Accommodate off hours, non-traditional venues (airport, coffee shop), and other agile hiring practices - be flexible.

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Mixed Signals

While ADP projected a gain of 201,000 private payrolls last Thursday, the very next day the BLS employment data reported that only 103,000 private sector jobs were created. The anemic jobs report begs the question of whether the Fed will start another round of easing.

Despite the poor hiring numbers, the Monster employment index rose 9 points in August to 156, showing a fairly consistent climb upwards since 2010. And a two-month period of revenue deceleration among staffing firms halted in July, reports to the most recent "Staffing Industry Pulse Report". Produced by Staffing Industry Analysts, the report included data from 146 staffing firms.

CLEANTECH TRENDS
Wind Tax Credits Hanging in the Wind

The campaign trail has been heated over energy tax credits and subsidies. Ethanol, oil, gas, coal, and renewable energies are all being touted as job creators.

In Iowa, where 7,000 people are employed in the Wind industry, the candidates advocated for their positions for and against Wind subsidies. At stake is the federal renewable energy production tax credit (PTC) which provides an income tax credit of 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour for the production of electricity by Wind. It is set to expire on December 31, 2012 unless renewed.
President Obama has called on congress to extend the production tax credit; Romney has opposed the PTC for the Wind industry calling for free market forces to determine the energy winners.

Production tax credits promote the Wind industry at a national level. Tax incentives were first enacted in 1992 as a mechanism to bridge gap between establish and new energy technologies. The debate over the extension of Wind energy tax credits has been on-going since then.

Incentives had been allowed to expire every couple years until the last five when there was a continuous PTC in place, and the industry was able to scale up by attracting $15b in private investment. Previously, the discontinuity in the Wind PTC was a disincentive to investment, inhibiting industry growth.

TECH TRENDS
IT Expanding Demand, Expanding Salaries

The Information Technology sector continues to expand so far in 2012. Investment continues both in infrastructure and in staffing. Software developers, Health IT, and Security Cleared IT are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that from 2008 to 2018 Computer Software Engineers 283,000 jobs will be added. This adds to the competition for talent

Along with the increased competition for IT talent, are increased salaries, according to the 17th annual Redmond Salary Survey. Salaries stagnated for some years but many employers are seeing the wisdom of salary increases to current employees in order to stay competitive and retain technical talent.

There is also movement by employees at companies that are not giving raises. Despite very specific needs and employer demands for very specific skill sets and experience, for those who change companies, there is an associated salary increase. Given the 3.6 percent unemployment rate among IT workers that upward pressure on salaries looks set to continue.
