   Ken Oatman

Striving to be a leading renewable energy equipment and turnkey solution provider globally, the company has an unswerving commitment to delivering the highest quality and most cost-effective solar solutions. Understanding the company's strategy and their vision of partnering to achieve their customers' most challenging goals, when the VP of Sales needed to hire a Central Regional Sales Manager, Redfish Technology immediately knew who to look for. The role required a solar visionary, a sales management leader, and a solutions innovator.

REDFISH MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

August 2012

Greetings!

July's hiring was up overall despite a trend for slower hiring at this time of year. The biggest challenges remain getting the right person with the right qualifications and experience. Software and CleanTech remain strong, attracting VC and vying for talent.

MANAGING EXPECTATIONS:

A Prerequisite to Successful Hiring

By Heidi Clark, COO, CHO, Redfish Technology, Inc.

COO, CHO

One of the key competencies of an executive recruiter is that of setting expectations, yours and mine.

The recruiter is out there acting as an emissary for a company. She must embody the corporate values and ethics of his client, she must create enthusiasm and motivation for the opportunity. When reaching out to both potential candidates and professionals who may refer the next candidate, the recruiter is representing the company brand. The better the collaboration and communication between the hiring manager and the recruiter, the more successful the process.

The recruiter must understand the business unit's goals and the staffing strategy, and be able to effectively communicate with the hiring personnel involved. The recruiter must be able to review the job specifications and set realistic expectations regarding the pool of candidates and competitive compensation arrangements. The hiring process and timeline as well as a talent search feedback loop must be clearly established as well.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING SILICON VALLEY COMPANIES.

"Finding appropriate talent" is the biggest challenge according to Greg Becker, CEO of Silicon Valley Bank. "It is such an anomaly relative to the rest of the general economy that it is hard for the general economy to grasp how different it is." The problem is ubiquitous. Even when there is a general talent surplus and high unemployment, the problem of finding the right talent persists, especially in the tech sectors.

JOB MARKET INTELLIGENCE
Positive Job Creation Indicators Revealed in the 20th Anniversary Executive Job Market Intelligence Report

The report indicates that companies are planning on growth, both via new management hires and trading up new hires for existing executive roles to fill gaps or improve teams. Recruiters weighed in on executive job creation reporting they expect 51 percent of employers will be adding headcount through "trading up" with new hires for existing executive jobs and 27 percent will create new executive roles over the next six months. Only 2 percent of companies surveyed intend on continuing the management cutbacks that have been in effect during the economic downturn.

"The ExecuNet report is spot on in terms of the opportunities and challenges we are seeing in the High Technology sector in which we recruit," confirms Leah O'Flynn, Executive Recruiter, IT Division at Redfish Technology. "Our greatest successes continue to come from the personal and professional relationships we've built by networking with executive talent on a daily basis."

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Double last month's numbers

Payrolls rose 163,000 (private payrolls 172,000), over double last month's increase. Government jobs fell by 9,000, construction fell by 1,000. The good-producing sector added 24,000 jobs, the service-providing sectors 148,000, and manufacturing 25,000. Temp jobs rose by 14,000.

The numbers came in a bit better than expected overall as companies hire at a modest pave. Nonetheless the unemployment rate went up incrementally from 8.2 to 8.3%,

While the Fed was discussing more quantitative easing, the Dow Jones reacted favorably to the jobs report.

The staffing industry lost 43,600 jobs (down 1.7%) from June to July according to the BLS, year over year however the industry has grown headcount by 10.9%. Recruiting trends are cyclical and July tends to be a slower month for hiring.

CLEANTECH TRENDS
2012 Q1 Solar Update, From GreenTech Media

The first quarter of the year was the second highest on record for solar installations. 18,000 photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed generating a total of 506 megawatts (MW) of power. Residential and non-residential PV systems markets grew despite the uncertainty of project finance availability and import tariffs.

GTM Research estimates that U.S. share of PV installations worldwide will hit almost 11% in 2012, which is an increase from 7% in 2011 and 5% in 2010. This would put the U.S. market at number 4 worldwide.

Pricing continues to come down. Both polysilicon and PV components have been subject to oversupply globally since early 2011. PV installation prices too were down year over year: residential prices decreased 7.3%, commercial down 11.5%, and utility prices came down a whopping 24.7%. New Jersey led the U.S. states with 174 MW of installations in Q1, California is close behind.

TECH TRENDS
Software Leads the Funding Pack Q1 2012

The latest MoneyTree™ Report shows that of all the Venture Capital industries, Software leads the pack in garnering VC investment. At $1.6 billion dollars of investment this first quarter, the industry raised almost 20% less than last quarter's $2 billion. The most deals to be completed category also goes to the Software industry, at 231 rounds for a 12 percent decrease over 2011's 262 rounds in the last quarter.

This quarter's second place winners in dollars invested were the Biotechnology and Industrial/Energy sectors in a near tie at $780 million and $778 million respectively. In terms of first-time rounds in the first quarter, companies in the Software, Media & Entertainment, and the IT services industries received the most.

Clean Technology - which crosses over traditional MoneyTree industries, includes alternative energy, pollution and recycling, power supplies and conservation - garnered $951 million in 73 deals, down 30 percent in dollars and 11 percent in volume.
