SOCIAL NETWORK YOURSELF INTO YOUR NEXT JOB
By Leah O'Flynn, Executive Recruiter, IT Division
A majority of employers have no formal policy regarding the use of external social networking sites. Nonetheless, work hours or work computers are in most cases not the right time or property to be using to prospect and communicate about your job search. The risk is that your cohorts, your boss, or your future boss may question your priorities and loyalties, and have grave doubts about your effectiveness and your focus. That said, networking is a professional social activity that you really should be doing all the time, not just when you are looking for a job. Presenting an engaging, responsive, solutions-oriented attitude towards all people you interact with will win you a good image and reputation.
Effectively communicating what you do and how you did it well, without flaunting or bragging, is the way to remain in people's minds when they need a professional of your talents. Social media lends itself to this kind of communication. Of course, no proprietary or confidential information sharing would be appropriate, but tooting horns and celebrating public wins are ideal communications.
Did you just help you company release a new product? Tweet it and mention what your contribution was or how your team overcame obstacles in getting it to market on time and on budget. Were sales goals exceeded this quarter? Post to LinkedIn to announce the great news and link back to your company's press release on the subject, add a line about how your targets were met and give recognition to the new customers you made along the way.

The View From 5,318 Feet
While this recovery is much slower and longer than most post-recession recoveries, most economists anticipate modest growth for the rest of 2012, and stronger growth in 2013. The National Association for Business Economics panel predicts an average monthly growth of 188,000 of jobs in 2012, up from the previous forecast, with GDP growth of 2.8 percent.
So what does this mean for recruiting?
The health of the U.S. recruiting sector is obviously linked to the health of U.S. businesses. A recent survey by Bullhorn Reach showed that 70% of respondents (in the U.S.) reported that their firms either reached or surpassed their revenue goals for 2011. And the vast majority - 96% of survey respondents - expects 2012 revenues to increase.
A strong indicator of where recruiters feel the economy is heading lies in the firms' own hiring plans. 79% of recruiting firms responding plan to add staff.

COMPANIES DREAM ABOUT FILLING
CLOUD COMPUTING JOBS
By Ira S. Wolfe
Cloud computing jobs increased by 9 2 percent in February 2012 in comparison to numbers from February 2011. And it was up 400 percent from the same time in 2010. More than 2,400 companies posted job ads during the last quarter of 2011 and hiring demand grew 61% year-over-year. As a result hiring managers are having trouble finding workers to fill these positions. A shortage of skilled workers means demand is high for people with cloud computing experience and development skills.
The challenge in filling these jobs isn't just that experience or training is needed in technology. Workers proficient in cloud computing need skills in managing process and knowledge of the law. The shortages are not restricted to technology companies either. Nearly one-third of the jobs that are being created are non-IT positions, including marketing managers, sales managers, customer service representatives, and analysts.

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
The Muddle Through
Jobless claims hit the lowest levels in six weeks at the end of June, and ADP projected private payroll growth at 176,000 for the month. The staffing industry led employment growth by adding more than 25,000 jobs, an increase of 10.7% more jobs than a year ago. The Monster Employment Index jumped 6 points to 153 in June reflecting a strong uptick in online recruiting. Nonetheless the BLS reported only a modest 80,000 net gain in jobs, leaving the unemployment rate unchanged at 8.2 percent.
The BLS report shows positive signs: gains in manufacturing employment and production hours, and a rise in aggregate earnings. Hiring demand is strong in transportation & warehousing, pointing to strength in the supply chain and retail trade. There is some strength in the goods-producing sector, which added 13,000 in June. Professional and business services added 47,000 jobs during the month. The health care, wholesale trade, manufacturing, construction, and mining sectors all increased by various amounts.

TECH TRENDS
What Metros are Growing the Fastest in Tech/STEM jobs?
| | Hot Metros for Tech Jobs |
Forbes recently published an article "The Best Cities For Tech Jobs", in which the author, Joel Kotkin, analyzed tech-related jobs (including software, data processing and Internet publishing), and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related) employment, in companies spanning manufacturing to business services to finance.
Interestingly, Silicon Valley isn't in the top five despite the preponderance of high profile tech companies there. In fact, despite offering the most tech and STEM jobs in the U.S., Silicon Valley employed 170,000 less folks in 2011 than in 2000.
Coming in number one is the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro, with increased tech employment of 43% and STEM of 18% in the decade from 2001 to 2011. The last two years documented 12% growth in tech jobs, and 7.6% growth in STEM jobs.
