PERSONNEL MOBILIZATION DOCTRINE
By Joanna Bradley, IT Sales & Marketing Recruitment Manager
| | Joanna Bradley |
The term "Recruiting" originally meant "to enlist new soldiers". Every army needs to replenish troops over time, and at certain times they need to grow their numbers to accomplish specific operations.
Militaries, to facilitate this process, have established recruiting commands. These units are solely responsible for increasing military enlistment.
The mission of the United States Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) is to recruit candidates for service. This process includes the recruiting, medical and psychological examination, induction, and administrative processing of potential service personnel.
The Command is guided in its operations by the United States Mobilization Doctrine, the four tenets of this doctrine are: 1. Objective, 2. Unity of Effort, 3. Flexibility, 4. Timeliness.
In terms of winning the war for talent, companies working in coordination with their recruiters, would do well to take these mobilization doctrine tenets to heart. Let's redefine these in terms of recruiting today in the technology sectors (Clean Tech and High Tech alike). ... |
WOULD YOU PAY 13% MORE FOR CLEAN ENERGY?
On average, Americans are willing to pay 13 percent more for "clean" electricity, according to a new paper "Willingness to Pay and Political Support for a U.S. National Clean Energy Standard" by researchers at Yale and Harvard.
13 percent translates to $162 annually that Americans, on average, are willing to on top of their current electricity costs. People favor incurring the additional cost in order to support a National Clean Energy Standard (NCES) requiring that 80 percent of the energy be "clean," or not derived from fossil fuels.
With the goal of understanding the politically and economic feasibility of an NCES, the researchers conducted a nationally representative survey of 1,010 U.S. citizens between April 23 and May 12. Respondents were asked whether they would support or oppose an NCES, with the goal of 80 percent clean energy by 2035.

PUFFING, PADDING, LYING
What a yahoo!
The Merriam-Webster Online defines the noun yahoo as a boorish, crass, or stupid person. And while we certainly wouldn't want to call former Yahoo! CEO Scott Thompson a yahoo, he did make a very stupid decision.
How his bio dating back to his PayPal tenure came to include a computer science degree from Stonehill College is still unclear. This fictitious degree has replicated itself throughout two companies' bios and into corporate documents recently filed with the SEC.
Scott Thompson tried to blame the introduction of the fictitious degree on the executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles. "We've are often asked to help candidates with resumes, to give feedback on organization, content, style," said executive tech recruiter Rob Reeves, Redfish Technology. "However a recruiter would never add or invent information. It is absolutely an absurd claim."
Ultimately, whether you puff, pad or lie, a day of reckoning will come.

FINS: WHEN JOINING A START-UP, THE USUAL RULES DON'T APPLY
By Joseph Walker
You've decided to join a start-up. You've gone through a rigorous interview selection process and have been deemed worthy of joining a small band of brothers dedicated to nothing less than ringing the Nasdaq bell and becoming millionaires many times over.
In the meantime, though, you've got bills to pay. So how do you navigate the trickier aspects of salary negotiations with your soon-to-be surrogate family? After all, these aren't some random human resource managers at a giant corporation who you will never have to deal with again.
To help, we've put together a simple guide to educating yourself on the finer points of start-up salary negotiations. Good luck and may the equity packages be forever in your favor.
...
Our own, Joanna Bradley, was interviewed for the article:
Which isn't to say that you can't ask for more than what the company offers, but you've got to pick what's most important to you. By the time you get to the offer stage with a start-up, the company has interviewed dozens of candidates and identified you as their top pick. They want to do what it takes to hire you, but they're also resource-constrained. So make a good case for why you deserve what you're asking for, and why it's important to you, says Joanna Bradley of recruiting firm Redfish Technology. Often times a bump in cash compensation may mean fewer stock options.
"Before you ask for more--whatever 'more' is--know what you're asking for," Bradley says. "If you're asking for a $10,000 bump in salary, make sure you say, 'If I get X, then I'm on board.'"

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Big Disappointment in the Jobs Numbers this Month.
At half of what was expected, the U.S. added only 69,000 jobs in May. The pace of hiring slowed sharply, and the weakness was across the board. Some economists attribute this to employers taking the sideline in the midst of economic uncertainties in Europe and fears of a global slowdown.
March and April were both downwardly revised by about 50,000 jobs. Unemployment rate rose for the first time in almost a year, to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent.
This month marks the third year since the Great Recession officially ended. And yet, we have a net of 5 million jobs less than we did in December 2007.

TECH TRENDS
BATTLE FOR THE INTERNET
I really enjoyed the seven day series of articles that the Guardian put together under the title Battle For the Internet. In a nutshell these are the topics the clusters of articles explore and address under the sequential themes.
1st Day: "The New Cold War" - Exploring forces and issues surrounding an open or closed internet.
These articles explore the forces that seek to censure and close the internet. The forces that would control public information and the use of the internet include the usual suspects of the governments in China (controllers of the "Great Firewall") in some countries in Arabia and Eastern Europe, but interestingly Apple and FaceBook are named as would-be tenders of "Walled Gardens".
The forces striving to liberate the internet for all include subversive groups like WikiLeaks, and establishment established groups such as US government-funded technology project "Commotion Wireless". Commotion Wireless enables any smartphone user to connect with other smartphones to form a "mesh network", or impromptu internet, and hence defy censorship efforts allowing communication in stealth mode.
2nd Day: "Militarisation of Cyberspace" - Cyber "War Games" orchestrated between Chinese and American think tanks
Hypothetical "what ifs" are being played out between Chinese and American think tanks with the objective of preventing sudden military escalation between either if they felt they were being targeted.

CATEGORIZING HYBRID RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS
By John Whitney AIA
What circumstances make hybrid power systems reasonable, economical, and/or highly desirable? This is a work in progress, but I would like to achieve more clarity in my thinking about hybrid renewable energy systems. Here's what I've got so far (I'm looking for feedback): By their very nature, hybrid energy systems are developed to solve a problem with a stand-alone generation system. The problem can be situational (remote location makes access to conventional fuels and power grid difficult or impossible) or it can be a system-specific shortcoming (i.e., the intermittent nature of some renewable generation technologies). Additional stimulus for their use may include environmental (desire to lessen impact of conventional generation plant), or economical (use of multiple energy sources to drive a shared generation technology and transmission access) motives.

Every year the Silicon Valley Bank published its Startup Outlook Survey. Intimately acquainted with Silicon Valley startups in high technology, software, and clean technology, SVB has their finger on the industry pulse. "The 2012 Startup Outlook Survey captures a U.S. economy in transition. The technology sector continues to lead the broader economy out of the downturn, posting strong returns even as the overall economy strains to rebound.
