FEATURED PLACEMENT
John Friese,
Front End Engineer - Social Media Apps
John Friese
John has 13 years of graphic design experience and obtained his certification from the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University in front end web development. As a personable creative, he has successfully worked as a highly valued consultant, and as senior graphic designer and integral member of a nimble start-up design firm to help team brand and re-brand businesses. In addition to his creativity and ability to understand client needs, John's strengths include solid complex design CSS ability and a variety of other technical skills necessary for designing multiple applications as well as relationship building and a go-getter attitude.
This hot social media applications company recently received the Crunchies "Best Enterprise" award at TechCrunch; it is recognized, well-funded and profitable. The VP of Creative Services oversees accounts for seven of the top ten largest global advertisers and creation of applications reaching over 8 million internet users each month. When he needed to hire a new developer for the Client Services Team, Redfish sought out the most creative talent. The position required the ability to balance a large workload with demanding deadlines. The job provided an opportunity to implement sites, in collaboration with the product development department and tech department, participating in improving design and site layouts and evolving client-side solutions.
"Beth from Redfish contacted me about a position that I applied for online about 2 hours after I hit "submit resume". She walked me through the details of the position and the company. She was very comforting with all my questions and concerns and she was able to get back to me with answers from the company if needed. She kept me informed on each step of the hiring process and contacted me about any leads or changes from the company. We were able to work out a time and date for when I would be able to make in for an in-person interview.  Seeing as this was a relocation position for me, she made sure that I was comfortable with the switch. As I told her, this was the perfect position for me and she worked to make sure I was able to at least get my foot in the door for an interview. I was very pleased with her attitude, service and friendly advice when it came to landing this amazing position for an amazing company." - John Friese

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Jobs Growth Anemic,
yet Senior Talent in Shortage in Certain Sectors

The monthly BLS employment report anemically came in 117,000 nonfarm employment and 154,000 in total private employment. Gains were seen in health care, retail trade, manufacturing, and mining; while Government employment continued to decline. Manufacturing employment increased in by 24,000, professional and technical services increased by 18,000, Government employment decreased by 37,000. The unemployment rate stayed put at 9.1% (13.9 million people).

Nonetheless, according to the Association of Executive Search Consultants' (AESC), 66% of search professionals have a positive prediction for their industry in the second half of the year. The biggest growth in demand for senior talent is in the Energy/Natural Resources sector.

The United States is experiencing a "sustained resurgence of demand" according to AESC President, Peter Felix. Worldwide, the General Management/CEO/COO functions are anticipated to experience the greatest shortage of talent, followed by Business Development and then Engineering.  Firms surveyed for the 2011 AESC Member Mid-Year Outlook Report indicate plans to hire more consultants and researches through the end of 2011 to keep up. Felix stated "All this points to the re-emergence of executive talent scarcity and the critical need for organizations to find top quality leaders ...".
IT EMPLOYMENT TRENDS

Redfish is seeing competition for key technology roles, which we discuss in Executive Recruiter, Andy Nacsin's article "Winning the Tech Talent War".  Hiring and job postings are continuing to grow overall as evidenced in recent reporting on IT jobs.

The TechServe Alliance just published its IT Employment Index for June, showing an increase of 132,800 (up 3.39%) from June 2010. Overall in Q2 of this year the number of IT jobs has increased, as it had since December 2009, however the month of June slipped slightly by 300 from the month before. IT employment is at 4,051,200; an increase of approximately 133,000 jobs since June 2010. Indeed.com reports that Information Technology job postings have increased 44% over July 2010 (8% over last quarter), and clicks on those jobs have increased 7% since July 2010.

"The fact that total employment for telecommunications, data processing, information services, and system design sectors has risen by 58,300 jobs (seasonally adjusted) in the last 12 months is a good sign" said CEO of Janco, Victor Janulaitis.

GREEN TECH TRENDS
How can the Clean Economy be fostered and what is the potential? Sizing the Green Economy

The Clean Economy is already showing impressive growth, and the jobs are predominantly goods-producing and generate greater exports than the average US job. Metro hubs are home to clusters and innovation. What is the potential of this emerging economy and how can we foster and liberate its force? The report "Sizing the Clean Economy" from the Brookings Institute takes a good look at potential job creation and economy restructuring.

WINNING THE TECH TALENT WAR

By Andy Nacsin, Executive Recruiter, Development Director

In today's economic situation, companies are facing multiple new challenges when it comes to staffing.  According to Forrester Research, today's recruiting growth rate prediction is at 8%.  Many theorists believe that this is because of the looming talent shortage and disconnect between positions open and skills of candidates applying.  Another factor is that companies, while emerging from recession, are still remaining cautious on spending and are very selective when acquiring talent, regardless of their growing need to add headcount.  Our nationwide overall unemployment rate has been hovering around 10%, and yet when we take a closer look within technology these numbers are closer to 4%.  Other considerations that are affecting this climate are employee turnover, Baby Boomers retiring, more restrictive policies on foreign workers, companies resistant to relocation costs, and overall reluctance from employees to change jobs.  So our challenge is how to cope with a growing talent shortage within the high tech and green tech industries.

SALARY NEGOTIATION -
Tips You Can Use In Any Job Market

The 'how to' of negotiating salaries has likely been a hot topic since the invention of employment. Jobs, companies, and employers are as different as snowflakes and cannot be lumped into any generalized salary list.  It is important to consider each snowflake individually. While it's great to think big, it is important to consider your bottom line. Know ahead of your search what is non-negotiable and what makes your 'dream' job.

TO COUNTER OFFER OR NOT TO COUNTER OFFER?

Whether a prized executive has been actively looking for another opportunity, or unexpectedly recruited for a new position, should you make a counter offer to keep him or her? The time and cost of hiring and training are great; separation from a bad hire and lost opportunities present another drain of time and money. Your valued executive has another offer but could be tempted to stay by a counter. Here are some talent management issues that need to be considered in terms of outbidding an offer, countering based on the executive's motivations, potential consequences of a counter, and systemic voluntary separation causes you should consider addressing.
