FEATURED PLACEMENT
Subrat Nayak, Electrical Engineer - Electric Vehicle Technology

The CTO of this well-reputed electrical vehicle technology company reached out to Redfish to find an electrical engineer for their cutting edge development team. The right person needed relevant experience in logic, embedded and mixed signal systems; experience in battery management techniques and design for automotive environments was also highly desirable. Role is responsible for schematic design of microcontroller, logic, and mixed signal electronic circuits and digital and analog electronics design and development. The position offered equity and the opportunity to work with a pioneering and visionary team.
Redfish connected with Subrat and honed in on his extensive electrical engineering education as well as his initiative and leadership experience on multiple vehicle machine projects. Subrat has an MS in Mechanical Engineering (Dynamics and Controls), an MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and a Bachelor's of Technology in Electrical Engineering. Subrat has skills in autonomous sub-battery charging systems, embedded firmware, digital design and hardware experience with analog, digital and power electronics. He has also worked on electrical system design improvements in robotics, and led the electrical teams of SubjuGator 2010, and the Human Powered Submarine. The skills came together beautifully and there was a great cultural match with the company.
"Greg from Redfish called me within 12 hours of me applying for the job opening, he was very friendly and at the same time professional, he gave me a very clear picture of the position and the company which helped me prepare myself for the phone interview. He never left me assuming or guessing anything - right from the phone interview to the in-person interview and through signing the offer letter, he was there to clarify my concerns, and he made sure that everything was well planned on the employer's side and everything was conveyed to me clearly. Above all, the role and the company was a very good match to what I was looking for."- Subrat Nayak

STAFFING & EMPLOYMENT NEWS
Gaining Traction, Momentum Continues
We had good news on the hiring front last week as the Association of Executive Search Consultants proclaimed 2010 to be the "Year of Resurgence" and the Business Roundtable's first quarter 2011 CEO Economic Outlook Survey anticipated higher sales, increased capital expenditures, and additional hiring over the next six months, as well as a predicted real GDP growth at nearly 3% in 2011.
The Jobs Report backed up this optimism last week; March's payroll employment gained 216,000, higher than the 200,000 predicted. January & February revisions were also higher by 7,000. While this is below the approximately 300,000 jobs needed on a monthly basis for significant impact on the unemployment rate over the next 5 years, it does surpass the 150,000 needed to keep pace with population growth.

IT TRENDS
Hot Companies, VC Bets

VentureBeat's top 10 VCs in 2010 included hot companies Twitter, Zynga, and Groupon. This creamy top ten included only one non-web/digital-media company: Boston-Power, maker of EV and Grid lithium-ion batteries.
Software was the single biggest benefactor in 2010 according to The PwC MoneyTreeTM Report Q4 2010/Full-year 2010. Life Sciences (biotech and medical devices) took nearly 1/3rd of the VC market. CleanTech grew significantly taking with five of the top ten deals in 2010 attracting 17% of VC dollars; the same percentage was invested in internet-based companies.
2011's Wall Street Journal's most likely to succeed US-based VC-funded companies shows a similar bent. The second annual "Top 50 Venture-Backed Companies" picks are based on the capital raised, the experience and track record of the talent and investors, and have a valuation of $1b or less. The winners are in Information Technology (23 out of 50), Business & Financial Services (12), Health Care (8), and Consumer Services (6).

GREEN TECH TRENDS: 1 IN 74,176 CHANCE
Nuclear Risks, Costs, Benefits
The epic tragedy unfolding in Japan is heating up the debate on nuclear power. What will this mean for the future of nuclear worldwide and in the US? There are significant risks, costs, and benefits.
Does 1 in 74,176 sound like good odds? I'm really not sure. Bill Dedman, of msnbc.com, writes that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has calculated the odds of an earthquake causing catastrophic failure to a nuclear plant and at the typical nuclear reactor in the U.S., "there's a 1 in 74,176 chance that the core could be damaged by an earthquake, exposing the public to radiation. That's 10 times more likely than you winning $10,000 by buying a ticket in the Powerball multistate lottery, where the chance is 1 in 723,145."
There are significant, risks, costs, and benefits. 120,000 people are employed in the nuclear sector (2009), and estimates are that 25,000 more workers will be needed by 2015.

Managers make tough decisions daily, yet when faced With a viable candidate they don't always make their move. Finding the right person is the goal, but don't let the hiring process or untested beliefs get in the way of bringing the right talent onboard in a timely fashion or losing that talent.
Can you hire the first candidate you've interviewed? Can you have it all and not settle? Do you hire by committee, does a decision need to be unanimous? Do you need to interview more people?

THE DIRTY DOZEN
12 Manager Mistakes that Spark Lawsuits
Memo To Managers from the HR Specialist
Lawsuits by employees against their employers have grown tremendously in the past decade. Sometimes those lawsuits have merit, sometimes they don't. But, either way, those lawsuits cost time and money to fight-money that is better spent on product development, training and raises. Here are 12 of the biggest manager mistakes that harm an organization's credibility in court.
Even worse, some laws-including federal overtime law and the Family and Medical Leave Act-allow employees to sue their supervisors directly, meaning a manager's personal bank account could be at stake.
Most lawsuits are not triggered by great injustices. Instead, simple management mistakes and perceived slights start the snowball of discontent rolling downhill toward the courtroom. Read the 12 biggest mistakes.
