The Job Market is Soft But Growing
Private employment payrolls increased for the 6th month in a row, an estimated 13,000 workers were added to private payrolls in June, indicating slower job growth than expected. 
 
Companies are Increasing Hiring, Budgets.
A recent TalentDrive survey indicates the second and third quarters this year will be the most active hiring periods. CEOs polled in the June 23, 2010 Business Roundtable Second Quarter 2010 CEO Economic Outlook Survey project hiring. "Our member CEOs plan to continue hiring and expect improved sales," said Ivan G. Seidenberg, Chairman of Business Roundtable and Chairman and CEO of Verizon Communications

Twitters! And Getting Rid of those Red Phones.
The US rankings in broadband speed, price, adoption rates, and quality are lagging behind former Soviet Republics. But no more, "We are now beginning the next transformation in information technology: the wireless broadband revolution."  We'll all be opening a Twitters (sic) account and tossing out the old red phone. In order to accommodate the 3 million iPads sold in 80 days and the proliferation of products such as smartphones, laptop internet connections, and new wireless devices such as Cisco's coming Cius tablet computer running on Google's Android OS, the amount of bandwidth available on the  airwaves will almost be doubled.

President Obama's initiative to unleash a wireless broadband revolution is welcome news. "This initiative will catalyze private-sector investment, contribute to economic growth, and help to create hundreds of thousands of jobs," stated Lawrence Summers, Obama's director of the National Economic Council., and would nearly double the available amount of bandwidth for wireless broadband, from today's 547 megahertz to about 1,000 megahertz. Wireless access is understood to be critical for the US to be competitive in technological innovation and to continue to develop "21st-century jobs".

There are many good reasons to take a sabbatical. These may be maternity (paternity leave), caring for a sick or elderly relative, personal enrichment or a business endeavor. Pursuing a degree or specialized training is not really a sabbatical. Whatever the reason for your sabbatical, a lot of your success in re-marketing yourself to prospective employers will depend on how you present the sabbatical.

About once a year I'm good for a cleanse. You know those things you've done or heard of friends doing that have you drinking water with some crazy concoction in it and basically not eating from anywhere between 7 and 9 days? This supposedly allows you to rid your body of toxins and clean yourself out. It's usually my wife's idea and I go along grudgingly. I've no idea whether it works or not, but I do know that while doing it, I'm hungry and irritable and spend most of my time trying to be civil to the people around me.

In any case, I'm on day 4 of this process and came across an article talking about how employers in this market are low-balling salaries for new hires and it went on to discuss how, as a candidate, to leverage your negotiating position by utilizing Salary.com and other tools (which can be quite misleading).  It occurred to me that in the 15 years of recruiting that I've done, this year is actually one where the candidate's and companies' expectations for compensation are the most in line. Even with the uncertainty in the market, the employment numbers not being stellar and the general turmoil at home and abroad, I'm seeing our clients continue to hire selectively and respectfully - without taking the short sided "low-balling" approach mentioned. Certainly the 10-15% salary bumps for moving to a new company (as commonly practiced in the not too distant past) are fewer and further apart, but I'm not watching massive pay cuts or major discrepancies on the salary subject.  As a matter of fact, there seems to be a bit more teamwork and cooperation between employee and employer as we realize that we're all in this together and we'll need to work together to be successful in these challenging times. This may be the silver lining.

It looks to me (misery loves company?) that we're all on a diet. Tighten the belt, lean up but keep moving forward and be ready to handle what's next.  Now, back to my "delicious shake"....
