Staffing & Employment News

Most experts tell us that the recession starting in December 2007 ended in mid-2009 when real GDP and industrial production bottomed and then started growing again. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) business cycle committee, domestic production and employment are the primary conceptual measures of economic activity.

The top staffing challenges are going to be 1) Competing on salary/compensation, 2) Maintaining productivity, and 3) Retaining Top Talent. Strategies for retaining your top performers include: Flexibility on work time/location; Training and Development opportunities; and Future Benefits and Performance-Based Incentives as the company's bottom lines improve.

There are clear impacts of recovery to employees too. Many companies are reviewing current staff in light of the recovery, and more than one quarter anticipate replacing low performers with top performers in the second quarter.

Clean & Green Job Trends

Pew Charitable Trusts 2010 report "Who's Winning the Clean Energy Race?" shows that the global clean energy economy has had investment growth of 230 percent since 2005. The sector is poised to grow 25 % to a record $200 billion in 2010.

Emerging as one of the most vital sectors in the U.S. economy, jobs in the clean energy sector grew 2.5 times faster than jobs overall from 1998 to 2007. By 2007, the last year for which data are available, more than 68,200 businesses nationwide accounted for more than 770,000 jobs. And the green jobs generated are well-paid for people across a range of skill levels and educational backgrounds.

Another recent report from the Department of Commerce recently issued a report entitled "Measuring the Green Economy"  showed a higher number of jobs in the green sector.

Get Smart: Information and Communication Technologies = Green Technologies

With the largest environmental catastrophe in the history of the US on-going, could there be a better time for making progress toward a smarter, greener future.

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) have reshaped our world. Today, 4 billion people have mobile phones, we connect to the internet to communicate, network, learn, work, play, and socialize. ...

From cell phones and mobile devices to the internet, ICT continue to accelerate the pace of innovative everyday products and services, and to accelerate the potential to impact global warming.  ...

Specifically, the ICT-enabled opportunities with the highest potential are: Smart Grid, Road Transportation, Smart Buildings and Travel Substitution.

According to the SMART 2020: Enabling the low carbon economy in the information age - US Report Addendum, ICT enabled solutions cumulatively could reduce annual CO2 emissions in the U.S. by 13-22% from business-as-usual projections for 2020. This would be equivalent to gross energy and fuel savings of $140-240 billion dollars.

Reinventing Recruiting . . . After the Recession
by Kristan Kennedy, High Tech Recruiter

THE YEAR WE WISH...DIDN'T HAPPEN

I don't know about the rest of you out there, but 2009 is a year I'm glad is gone.

Think back to the end of 2008 as a recruiter. I was confident!  I walked into the office one September morning expecting to schedule ten interviews for solid startups in California. Focused on the details of scheduling a dozen strong candidates, I was ill-prepared for the day's headlines. The Dow plunged 650 points. Lehman collapsed. Market confidence plunged in tandem with the Venture money that backed my companies and my world - It happened quickly, shockingly.

Seven of my companies froze hiring in the next 24 hours. Silicon Valley Venture Capital money flow dried up like a Sahara drought. Candidates calling "looking" for jobs increased tenfold in the ensuing weeks, scared of impending layoffs.  Even my hiring managers were sending me resumes!  For staffing specialists like myself, it was the "great depression" of technology recruiting - and my business disappeared in a week.

But that's yesterday's news. Fortunately, today's tech market is not only better and different but stronger.  Tech jobs are back. The big hiring picture is different than a year or eighteen months ago. My observation is this: Strong companies, solid talent and good recruiters have survived.  We've dusted ourselves off and are jump-starting talent acquisition. It's all coming back, but it looks different than 2008/2009, which could have been, the perfect storm.

Recession Over?

The Last Four Recessions and their Durations.

Start - End: Duration

Smart Grid Factoid

A 3% reduction in U.S. electric generation would mean a reduction of 123 million metric tons of carbon every year. This would eliminate the need for approximately 22 coal plants and is the equivalent of removing 15% of cars from the road.
