Greetings!
It is a particular pleasure to welcome in the Lunar New Year, and we are full of hope for all of the great things to come in 2011. As you'll see in this issue of our newsletter, our grantees are busy across the globe. They are our constant inspiration and reminders of the critical role that the arts play in nurturing positive growth and change in the world. Inspiring as well are our many supporters, for without their support for the ACC's program and belief in the power of individuals to achieve mutual understanding across cultures, we would not exist. Increasingly, we count among our supporters former grantees, who, having benefitted themselves from the opportunity for travel and research abroad, want to make those opportunities available to others. And speaking of this kind of generosity, we are delighted to announce the second ACC Auction in Manila, which features many works donated by former grantees. We encourage you to check out the work that is being auctioned in the link below and send in your bids!
Finally, we are very sad to note the passing of our dear friend, mentor, and grantee Ellen Stewart. A more generous soul never existed, nor anyone I know who dedicated their life so completely to art in its many forms and myriad languages. Her spirit lives on in all of the lives that she touched, and the spirit of inclusiveness and respect that she embodied.
With best wishes for an inspiring, positive, and creative year ahead,
Cecily D. Cook Senior Program Officer

The ACC notes with extreme sadness the loss of Ellen Stewart, pioneer of American experimental theatre, on January 13 in New York. Ellen was a great friend of the ACC who welcomed many of our grantees at La MaMa Experimental Theatre, her multicultural hothouse in the East Village of Manhattan. And they all called her "Mama." She was also the recipient of the ACC's 2000 John D. Rockefeller Award which acknowledges individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of international cultural exchange. There will never be another Mama like her.

Since 2000, this program has provided grants to over 50 Filipino artists and we hope to continue this mission to enable more artists and scholars to receive grants each year.

China: Jazz Singer Coco Zhao (grantee 2009) and Musician Wu Na (grantee 2007) Collaborate on New CD
Sonic Calligraphy is the result of the the musicians performing together for the first time in a series of concerts in China in 2009. A cosmos of music, at times familiar and sometimes unexpected, emerged from this unusual combination of the gu quin (an ancient 3000 year old Chinese zither), the piano, the percussion, and the two voices (male and female) singing in English, Chinese and wordlessly. The listener will be taken into this world of sound, where five musicians of European, Chinese and American backgrounds come together to present a new sonic experience. January 21-May 8, 2011
| |
Wang Qingsong: When Worlds Collide |
International Center of Photography 1133 Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street New York, NY 10036
This exhibition will mark the first U.S. solo show of Beijing artist Wang Qingsong, one of China's most highly regarded contemporary artists. Trained as a painter, Wang turned to photography in the late 1990s in order to convey a distinctive and often acerbic vision of Chinese society during the country's current economic boom. Working in the manner of a film director, he stages elaborate scenes involving dozens of models on enormous stages. His large-scale color photographs combine references to classic Chinese art with ironic nods to China's new material wealth and rapidly growing consumer culture. |
