Inspire Washington Launched in Spokane

With the coordination of numerous community partners, SAWDC recently launched Inspire Washington, a new initiative to connect students, career seekers, and educators with employers so that they can gain business and industry knowledge.

One of goals of the  project is to expose students and parents to local  employers so that they will better understand career opportunities in the Spokane Region. Middle school, high school and postsecondary educators can use the tool to gain knowledge aboutInspire Washington  local career pathways so they can help excite students about local opportunities, and in the near future, the system will offer direct connections between employers and educators for such things as industry tours, externships, and a speakers' bureau for in-class learning.

Additionally, the SAWDC has awarded Greater Spokane Incorporated funds, in partnership with Central Valley School District and Mead School District's new Riverpoint Academy, for the development of internship opportunities in high-wage, high-growth technical fields.

All area businesses are now able to build a profile, offer career guidance and promote real-world activities such as internships, company tours and more. Inspire Washington can help employers gain visibility and highlight their community involvement. It will also serve has a single point of contact to manage volunteer requests. Next Generation Zone Motivates Youth to Succeed

Danielle moved out of her home at age 14 and had her own apartment at 17. "Everything I've done is because of me, and I'm not going to give up," said the recent North Central High School graduate. But, she did find support at the Next Generation Zone, which helped her prepare for and find a job after high school.

She's now employed at Mid City Concern Senior Center doing a variety of tasks, including working in the kitchen to prepare meals and doing data entry in the office. "I interact with the seniors, and I love it," said Danielle. "I really get along with them."

Her time there has inspired her to further her education and become a social worker. She's continuing to work with the Next Generation Zone to fill out her school paperwork and plans to start next year at Spokane Community College. "I think this program is absolutely great," she said. "It's motivated me."
