Opportunity Internship Program Offers Real World Experience

The Spokane Area Workforce Development Council is set to fund its fourth group of students through the Opportunity Internship Program. The program aims to lift students out of poverty by helping them gain internships or pre-apprenticeship experience that leads to more work, further education and a career pathway in a high-demand, high-wage field.

Throughout the state, nearly 1,000 students have been served by the program since 2009. Students like 17-year-old Nathan Johnson who had been looking for steady work. "Money was tight at home, and I needed to find a job quickly," he said. Through the Opportunity Internship Program, Nathan was hired by Western States Steel as a welder. He worked hard and was asked to stay on as a full-time employee.

Nathan is about to finish high school and is saving his earnings to complete his welding certification. "I feel like I am ahead of a lot of kids my age," he said. "With my work history combined with my welding degree I will be able to get a high paying job."
