Spokane Area Workforce Development Council Receives Governor's Best Practice Award

The Work Ready Spokane initiative was recognized last week in a ceremony at the Capitol in Olympia. The project was named a Best Practice in Workforce and Economic Development by Gov. Christine Gregoire.

Work Ready Spokane was launched last year using ACT WorkKeys, a national work readiness assessment, to demonstrate a potential employee's workplace skills. It has proven to have application in secondary and postsecondary education as well as workforce and economic development.

Partners in the project include Triumph Composite Systems, Goodrich Corporation, Kaiser Aluminum, Greater Spokane Incorporated, Community Colleges of Spokane, Spokane Public Schools, Medical Lake High School, WorkSource Spokane and Next Generation Zone.

More than 700 certificates demonstrating work readiness have been awarded since the project began. Learn more about WorkKeys and the project here.

Pyrotek Expands and Trains Workforce

Spokane Valley manufacturer Pyrotek went against the grain last year when it chose to relocate its production line to the United States from Mexico.  The company received $150,000 in state funds to assist with the move. Half of that funding came through the SAWDC to hire and train new workers.

Since that time, Pyrotek has hired 25 new employees and created a production line in a newly leased facility. Workers have been trained both in the classroom and with hands-on training from experienced Pyrotek employees. The production line is operational, and the two main products have passed quality certification.

Pyrotek Finance Manager Michael Sekedat expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the SAWDC in assisting with the project and that the company is pleased with the outcome. "We are proud to have added new jobs into the Spokane area," he said.

Mark Mattke Elected to U.S. Conf. of Mayors WDC Board

SAWDC Executive Director Mark Mattke was recently elected to the United States Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council Board of Directors.

The council works with mayors' representatives to influence Congress and the U.S. Department of Labor in directing more employment and training funds to cities, to identify key issues in workforce development that affect cities, and to assure that the role of cities is key in all workforce development activities.
