Each month for the next two years, the Chattanooga, TN Parks Foundation will name two historically or culturally significant people with ties to the area to receive their own plaque on the Walnut St. Bridge. For August, local philanthropist Ruth S. Holmberg and respected actor/comedian Leslie Jordan (both Chattanooga natives) will receive this honor. Representatives from the Parks Foundation say that the middle of the west side of the bridge is being reserved for 40-50 celebrities selected for the Walk of Honor. Helen Hunt Movie to be Filmed in Chattanooga

helen hunt"Will To Succeed," a motion picture reportedly starring Oscar winner Helen Hunt, will begin filming in Chattanooga in the next few weeks, city officials say. "This is huge," said Missy Crutchfield, city administrator of the Department of Education, Art and Culture. "It will have a bigger impact on the city than 'Water for Elephants' did because it is the first feature film to be shot entirely, or almost entirely, here." Crutchfield said "Will to Succeed" is set in the 1970s and is centered on a high school. She could not release locations for the filming, she said, but said the Chattanooga Film Commission's Facebook page had clues. The page features pictures and maps of Baylor School. The film "is set at a prep school," Crutchfield acknowledged. Baylor officials, however, did confirm that the school had been contacted about the film!helen

passatsChattanooga-made Passats Roll Out!

passats

There has been a series of exciting moments locally since the initial announcement that Chattanooga was chosen as the site for a billion-dollar Volkswagen manufacturing plant. The latest good news is that VW has begun shipping out about 350 sparkling new automobiles from Chattanooga every day! While consumers far and wide will enjoy their new cars, of even greater interest here is the fact that thousands of local people are engaged in good jobs building the Passats, boosting our economy for many years to come. It's great to see the Volkswagen dream become a highly productive and beneficial reality.

Expansion of Lovell Field Brings Opportunity

plane

FedEx is expanding at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport by flying larger aircraft and leasing hangar space for the first time. "It will double the capacity we have for freight in and out of  Chattanooga," FedEx spokeswoman Sally Davenport said. Starting Oct. 3, Memphis-based FedEx Corp. will fly a Boeing 727 into Chattanooga every day, replacing two smaller aircraft, she said. The freight giant is leasing 12,000 square feet of hangar space at Lovell Field, officials said. "Certainly as the market grows, there will be [hiring] down the road," the company spokeswoman said. Mike Landguth, the airport's president, said the FedEx expansion is an example of the city's economic growth, making Lovell Field an attractive option. "We will continue to focus on the three major areas of aviation -commercial, corporate and general aviation and cargo - to ensure that we are positioned to capitalize on every opportunity for growth," he said.fedex

What you can get in the Chattanooga-area home market today

house

What kind of house will a quarter of a million dollars buy in (Chattanooga) Hamilton County? As it turns out, quite a lot. And almost certainly more than it would have in the pre-Great Recession years. At $250,000, roughly double the median price of all houses sold in the Chattanooga area last month, eight houses in Hamilton County are available. Earlier this week, a Times Free Press reporter, accompanied by Realtor Steven Sharpe of Keller Williams Realty, visited four of those houses. Two list for exactly $250,000, one is a dollar less at $249,999 and one is $100 less at $249,900. All four have four bedrooms (or space that could be a fourth bedroom) and at least two-and-a-half baths, and the four range in size from 2,169 to 4,528 square feet. They also range in age: The oldest was built in 1913, the newest in 2011. Three are in Chattanooga, and one is in an unincorporated part of Hamilton County. Descriptions of each house are based on the tour and comparisons available from Multiple Listing Service information. kohlsKohl's Poised to Become Region's Biggest Retailer

house

Slated to open its third and fourth stores in the Chattanooga area later this month, Kohl's is poised to become one of the region's biggest retailers. When new Hixson and Dalton, Ga., sites are added to existing locations in Chattanooga and Cleveland, Tenn., the Wisconsin retailer's presence in the area will rival other department store chains such as Sears and J.C. Penney Co. Kohl's will employ more than 500 workers when the new stores are fully staffed. In addition to the two new stores, Kohl's is wrapping up an extensive remodeling of its store on Gunbarrel Road. "The history of the company is that they've always reinvented or reinvested to make it bigger and stronger," said Stephen Epperson, assistant manager of the Chattanooga store. Kohl's calls itself a family-focused, value-oriented specialty department store focusing on moderately priced clothing, shoes and home products.

"Wanted to share one of my favorite pictures of my daughter, Julia Skye Hoff, exploring the city - taken last fall on one of our strolls from the Riverwalk (start at the Boathouse) to the Bluff View district - she is one week from her one-year birthday in this picture and loved getting out of her stroller at the Hunter to stand and take in the view! Many fond memories from our walks on the Riverwalk and downtown, from the time she was a couple of months old (now she walks on her own, of course)."- Jennifer Hoff
