Hello Expressive Arts Friends! The Expressive Arts are a healing force, whether the focus is the individual, a family, a group, a community, or the planet. The arts are a universal language, and have the power to facilitate communication, even between people or groups that may not otherwise be open to, or have the opportunity for, authentic communication. Expressive Arts also facilitates communication within. Our images may make visible those aspects of ourselves that we may have lost touch with or forgotten. The Scope of Expressive Arts - Individual, Group, and Community is one of our Expressive Arts Florida Institute courses, next offered October 11-14, 2012. We move from the intra-personal, to the interpersonal, to community focus in this intensive weekend, and the IMAGINE project is the Art-for-Social-Change component of this course. This month, the IMAGINE Project went to the Speak Up for Kids Conference. It was inspiring! See the full story and photos here.We are very excited by the energy of this project, as it grows, both in size and in scope. This is how it looked early in May. It has grown significantly since then! If you would like more information on how to bring the IMAGINE Project to your business, conference, or event, please contact us. We will be happy to consult with you and explore this possibility! If you are interested in our Institute Training, please contact us for more information. Orientation to Expressive Arts offered on Oct. 11. For an inspiring read on Art for Social Change, see this book recommendation.Coming up this month: Victoria begins her new Painting Your Creative Edge Studio Retreat! STUDIO RETREAT
In this studio retreat, we will be working from our INNER CORE to our OUTER EDGE, journeying inward then outward, using the creative edge as a holding point for new awareness.
Saturdays, June 16, July 14, August 11
10 am to 4:30 pm
Attendance to all 3 sessions is preferred.
Call Victoria for options.
Facilitated by: Victoria Domenichello-Anderson, M.A.
Registered Expressive Arts Consultant Educator
Core Faculty, Expressive Arts Florida Institute.
In this workshop series we will go to the periphery of our creative edge, challenge our comfort zone, and see what comes next. By opening up to those things that seem just beyond our reach, and exploring them through the art process we are able to gain a new awareness of ourselves and our life path. This exploration often gives new insights into our inner and outer worlds and assists us in merging the two.
Each session we will paint on a large canvas using acrylics. Focusing on our particular life's intention for that week and using some of the prompts below*, we will be led through a centering exercise, asked to do some spontaneous writing, and then go into our painting exploration. We will create in a studio atmosphere and Victoria will be mentoring along the way, both individually and as the group.
*Where am I now? What do I already know? Where am I going? Where do I want to be?
$85.00 per session or $230.00 (10% off) for all 3.

SPEAK UP FOR KIDS CONFERENCE
On May 25th Victoria, Elizabeth, and Tamara presented the IMAGINE project at the "Speak up for Kids Conference" hosted by: State College of Florida, Center for Innovation and Technology, in Lakewood Ranch. This conference honored National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. Victoria gave a brief history of Expressive Arts Florida Institute and the IMAGINE project. We shared a slide show of all community involvement to date.
Throughout the day we facilitated collaborative art making in an open studio format. Conference attendees created and added their cloth strips to this project in and around inspiring break out sessions and other scheduled events.
"The conference participants have such a passion for the well-being of children. It was wonderful to see these hard-working child advocates take a moment to give voice, through the arts process, to making the world a healthier place for children. In return, they gave themselves time to share, renew, and reflect with each other. Each of their visions will be added to this ongoing art-for-social-change project." Victoria
If you would like more information on how to bring the IMAGINE Project to your business, conference, or event, please contact us. We will be happy to consult with you and explore this possibility! |

WE RECOMMEND
Art in Action: Expressive Arts Therapy and Social Change is a wonderful new book (2011) edited by Ellen G. Levine and Stephen K. Levine (Jessica Kingsley Publishers).
The "Principles" section includes fascinating and informative chapters by Stephen Levine, Ellen Levine, Karen Estrella, Paolo Knill, and Shaun McNiff. A section on "Issues" includes work with women in Israel, in a clinic for Iraqis in Jordan, and a Bosnian refugee camp in Slovenia. The third section - "Projects" is a chronicle of diverse Expressive Arts work in Peru, Bolivia, Sierra Leone, and more. A beautiful Forward entitled "Eureka - Finding Gold in a Leaden World" really captured my attention and set the context. I loved Ellen Levine's description of her personal journey into this work. Sally Atkins, in her chapter on her work in Bolivia, says: "The expressive arts have given us a language within which to communicate the depth of our human stories. Art-making and sharing have helped us to shape and hold the experience of encountering a culture different form our own, and to expand our understanding and appreciation of that culture. Marybeth Morand, in the Afterword, says: "Every chapter adds a different and indispensable dimension to facilitating art with precarious communities. In each instance the art that was created epitomized the community at the specific place, in that particular time, and under those special circumstances in a way that no statistics or prescribed standards ...ever could. That is the amazing power of art". Here is the link: http://www.jkp.com/catalogue/book/9781849058209
