Hello Expressive Arts Friends! We are writing to you this month from a gallery filled with Mandalas! Such beauty! The opening reception for our 4th annual Community Mandala Exhibit was a great success. We have put together a photo collage for you here. If you are in the Sarasota area, we encourage to stop by for a visit, and, if not, we are sharing images daily on our Facebook page. The exhibit continues through March 23, with another reception on Friday March 16, 6-10 pm, in conjunction with the Towles Court Art Walk.    A huge "thank you" to the artists.
L-R: Victoria Domenichello-Anderson, Patrice Kennedy, Colleen Jais, Kathleen Horne, Jane Keil Yoder, Donna Papenhausen, Krista McCampbell, Patricia Manning, Tamara Teeter Knapp. (missing from photo: Deborah Vetter, Melissa Rhodes, Elizabeth Bornstein)   And our appreciation and gratitude to John Wheatley, for providing 4 hours of smooth and lovely saxophone music on our opening night! We had great fun at the reception creating a collaborative mandala (left) which is still growing as gallery visitors each add their unique touch. Started as a "seed" in the center, it is evolving organically as each person has adds their mark/symbol/color, all the way around the circle. We invite you to come by during gallery hours, to add to this community piece. We learned this mandala-making process from Prema Akasha, from watching her video - How to Grow a Mandala. We have adapted it as a collaborative art process. The "pass-around" mandalas (below, right) were created last week by 10 of us at Expressive Arts Community Networking. Aren't they stunning? It was fascinating to watch them grow, as we passed them around the circle, each person contributing to every mandala. When we looked at them as a grouping, we saw them as our "collaborative mandala garden". Networking is a great opportunity to try out something new, so consider joining us for a guest facilitator spot.   If you enjoy mandalas or would like to learn more about them, consider joining our Online Mandala Forum. or taking the upcoming   Introductory Mandala Workshop. We have lots more going on at EAF this month and next, so read on for information about upcoming workshops and classes - Art as a Healing Practice on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings,   Intro to Touch Drawing and Touch Drawing- Mounting and Developing,  our April   Intermodal Intensive, and a very special Authentic Voicework workshop by guest facilitator Stephanie Heidemann.Very soon, we will be announcing our first group of Expressive Arts Florida students to attain their Level One Certificate! Stay tuned! We are always accepting applications for the Institute Training, - all course are offered as weekend intensives in April, October, and January. More info here.New, in our Gallery Shop, Expressive Arts Florida tote bags! And, the IMAGINE Project continues! We are excited to announce our new Facebook page. The IMAGINE ProjectBegun as part of our October class: Expressive Arts Florida Institute 130: The Scope of Expressive Arts - Individual, Group, and Community, this collaborative arts-for-social-change project is quickly taking form! Each EAFI student has taken the IMAGINE project to her own community, and worked with a group there. The participants choose a theme, and create their "imagine" visions on strips of unbleached muslin.
"    From Elaine Donaghue "I did my IMAGINE Project with women who are in weekly group therapy with myself and my co-therapist. I began the session with a guided meditation exploring inner polarities, and finding balance. Then, on the fabric strips, each participant depicted, in their own way,how the world would look if we each brought our whole, integrated selves to it. The experience went really well and the participants enjoyed and profited from it".

Back at Expressive Arts Florida, our participants are mailing us the fabric strips, and we are knitting them together. It is very exciting to receive these packets in the mail, and to begin the joining process.  At our "home" location, gallery visitors and friends are sitting down to create "imagine" pieces of their own, and leaving them for us to include in the overall project. At this point - the beginning - we can't really imagine where all of this is going to go! Stay tuned; we will post an update each month. back to top |
