Hello Expressive Arts friends!

Welcome to Autumn....there is a cool breeze and a breath of fresh air here in Florida, bringing some welcome relief from the intense heat of summer. Kathleen arrived back from B.C. last week and the four of us immersed ourselves in a 2 day business retreat, to reconnect and plan. As many of you know, we use the Expressive Arts in our own business process, and, during our retreat, a new collaborative mandala was born. When this painting is finished, it will join the others on the wall of our gallery space. The joint mandala painting process our unique signature practice. We created it to support and enhance the quality of our business collaboration. Through our mandala making, we have a found a rhythm that we have come to trust. When our heads start to hurt from visioning, thinking, planning, and talking, we realize "it's time to paint". A while later, paint brushes in hands, colorful strokes dancing together on the canvas, we notice that we are all breathing more deeply and feeling more focused. We continue to brainstorm and plan, and we become clearer as we paint. We take delight in the surprising beauty of what is showing up on our canvas, and what we are creating together in the world. We can trust our creative process.  All of us.
Here are some of the mandalas we have created together:

We will be welcoming our Expressive Arts Florida Institute students for the intensive: The Scope of Expressive Arts: Individual, Group, and Community from Oct. 13-16. our first group of students will be attaining their Level One Certificate in the fall! We are blessed to have such an amazing group who have gathered from far and wide to explore the personal and professional realms of this wonderful field.

This month, Kathleen will offer her Art as a Healing Practice series on Friday mornings. We are honored to be presenting A Process of Transformation: from Self-Consciousness to Self-Expression, facilitated by Jared Massanari, Ph.D. of Asheville, N.C, on Oct. 17.  Our 3rd Annual Touch Drawing Exhibit is coming up in November, and our "call for artists" is now out. If you have done Touch Drawing, and you would like to learn to mount and develop them, consider attending our Touch Drawing: Mounting and Developing Workshop on Saturday Oct. 29. In December, we will be welcoming guest presenters Cynthia Bydlinski and Muff Calderon for their workshop: Being Your Own Village:  A Celebration of Your Inner Strengths.

Our goal is to create an array of diverse opportunities that encourage each of you to make Expressive Arts a part of your life. Please let us know what YOU would like!

With appreciation,

Expressive Arts Florida Institute is a two-level training program for those interested in pursuing the Expressive Arts as a professional path, whether integrating it into an existing career, or beginning a career in the expressive arts field.

An INTERMODAL EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING PROGRAM, Expressive Arts Florida Institute is grounded in a firm belief that an integrated arts approach is a powerful agent of change. Students will participate in visual art-making of various kinds, writing, poetry, music, movement, drama, and guided visualization. An emphasis will be on the power of following the natural creative flow from one arts modality to another.

The learning format is THREE WEEKEND INTENSIVE COURSES  per calendar year, generally in January, April, and October in Sarasota, FL. Each weekend is 25 hours of class time. In addition, there is a one-day orientation program for new students. There are also elective credits, which students can often earn in their own community, online communication with an advisor, and a Practicum/Internship at the end of the second year.  We offer flexibility for entry of new students; they may start the program with any of the Level 1 weekend intensives. Our goal is to create a FLEXIBLE LEARNING FORMAT for students traveling to Sarasota from other areas.

IN OUR COMMUNITY

THE NARRATIVE ART QUILT PROJECT

COMMUNITY

Four clients came to Manatee Glens Hospital once a week for approximately 24 weeks to design and create their own 30 inch quilt square.  Each square depicts the client's journey to recovery. The clients have chronic and persistent mental illnesses. They are all artists but had no or little experience working on fabric.

Facilatators were Sandra Dryden and Elsa Hanna. Deb McKeever was the project coordinator and Sindy Snyder assisted her in this effort.

The four quilt squares will be shown at the Manatee Glens Client Art Show at Still Life in G Gallery, 1014 12th St. W. in the Village of the Arts in Bradenton on October 7th from 6:00 pm until 9:30 pm. The show will run through Nov. 26th and the gallery is open Saturdays from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm. It is open to the public.
