Hello Expressive Arts friends!

Summer is winding down and, in Florida, we are thankfully beginning to anticipate some cooler weather. We want to extend our appreciation to everyone who participated in our summer workshops and classes. Rich sharing, new inspiration and connections, and personal creative breakthroughs were evident in the Touch Drawing Intensive, Painting your Creative Edge, Felting, Bookmaking, Color Mixing, Open Studio, and the online Mandala Forum and Mentoring Group. We have been taking some time for planning and preparing for a full Fall season. Expressive Arts Florida Institute students are getting ready for the October Intensive - The Scope of Expressive Arts - and several new students will be joining in. Read on for announcements and registration information for a terrific line-up of upcoming classes, workshops, exhibits, educational opportunities, and community news. We are honored to be presenting A Process of Transformation: from Self-Consciousness to Self-Expression, facilitated by Jared Massanari, Ph.D. of Asheville, N.C.  Registration is now open for Painting Your Creative Edge, Art as a Healing Practice, a combined Color Mixing and Bookmaking class,  Expressive Arts Community Networking, and Expressive Arts for Body, Mind, Spirit.  See the "call for artists" for our Third Annual Touch Drawing Exhibit, opening November 18. Our goal is to create an array of diverse opportunities that encourage each of you to make Expressive Arts a part of your life. Please let us know what YOU would like!

For inspiration about the power of the arts, watch this little video with a big message!

PAINTING YOUR CREATIVE EDGE

Series 3

with Victoria

Thursdays, September 15, 22, and 29th.

1-4 PM. New Time

In this Series we will be working from the OUTER EDGE,

journeying inward, using the "creative edge" as a holding point.

We will go to periphery of our creativity, challenge our comfort zone, and see what comes next. By opening up to those things that seem just beyond our reach, and exploring them through the art process, we are able to gain a new awareness of ourselves and our life path. The process often gives new insights into our inner and outer worlds.

We will paint on a large canvas using acrylics and create a Mandala as our format. Focusing on the particular intention for that week and using the prompts below, participants will be led through a centering exercise, asked to do some spontaneous writing, and then go into painting. One of 3 sections of the Mandala will be worked on each week, culminated in a completed artwork.

Week 1: Where am I Now ?

Week 2: Where am I Going?

Week 3: Where Do I Want to Be?

Fee: $110Includes canvases and basic acrylic paints. You are welcome to bring your own acrylics and brushes to supplement ours.

Please email your intention to attend to  gallery@expressiveartsflorida.com by Saturday, September 10th. To pay by check, send to 200 S. Washington Blvd. Suite 1, Sarasota, Fl. 34236. Online credit card payments here. Payment must be received to confirm attendance. 941-366-9595

"The Creative Edge Workshop with Victoria was incredible to say the least! It was eye opening and soul deepening! Victoria has a wonderful way of slowing me down, helping me center and allowing my art to take new twists and turns. The creative edge is a necessary class for helping you reflect upon where you are, where you're going and tapping into the dreams of where you want to be!"

IN OUR COMMUNITY

Deb McKeever, Therapist with Art&Healing training coordinates

The Narrative Art Quilt Project...

COMMUNITY

Four clients came to Manatee Glens Hospital every Tuesday afternoon for two hours for approximately 24 weeks to design and create their own 30 inch quilt square.  Each square depicts the client's journey to recovery. The clients have chronic and persistent mental illnesses. They are all artists but had no or little experience working on fabric.

Facilatators were Sandra Dryden and Elsa Hanna. Deb McKeever was the project coordinator and Sindy Snyder assisted her in this effort.

During the first six weeks the clients shared their recovery stories and were introduced to techniques they could use on cloth.  The remaining time was used to design and construct their quilt tops.  They all ventured into new territory, using a sewing machine for the first time, learning embroidery stitches, printing images onto paper cloth and painting on cloth.  They bonded over time and critiqued each other's work.

The Narrative Art Quilt Project was funded by a grant from the patrons of Bonni Bakes Restaurant in the Village of the Arts in Bradenton, Florida. An additional donation was received from NAMI.

The four quilt squares will be shown at the Manatee Glens Client Art Show at Still Life in G Gallery, 1014 12th St. W. in the Village of the Arts in Bradenton on October 7th from 6:00 pm until 9:30 pm. The show will run through Nov. 26th and the gallery is open Saturdays from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm. It is open to the public.
