HELLO and WELCOME to our MARCH 2011 Edition of  EXPRESSIVE ARTS FLORIDA NEWS!

. We are amazed that it is already March, and, here in Florida, we are enjoying some gorgeous spring weather!  In the cycle of creativity, the spring represents the birth of new ideas, projects, or visions.  This time naturally follows a period of wintering, a time where it might look like not much is happening, but when the seeds of the new are being readied for their spring unfolding. The seasons of the year, in their cyclical form, are  a Mandala - a circle - that we live within.     At Expressive Arts Florida, we are hosting our third annual community mandala exhibit:  MANDALA: Sacred Circles Within and Beyond - and our gallery space is filled with many inspiring variations of the Mandala form, as interpreted through the artistic visions of these artists: Colleen Jais, Linda Joffe, Judy Lyon, Jo Mooy, Joane Nevin, Ilona Ratajczak, Peter Reed, Melissa Rhodes, Joyce Shera, Marianne Sun, Cynthia Widman, Ginny Reynolds and the Westminster Shores Assisted Living Residents, Sarasota Bay Club Owners and Staff, Elizabeth Bornstein, Victoria Domenichello-Anderson, Kathleen Horne, Tamara Teeter Knapp.

The opening reception on February 18 was a wonderful evening, and we invite you to enjoy the photos in the left column.
In addition to the participating community artists, we would like to extend our thanks to Brent MacPhail for providing the terrific live music, and the members of the online Mandala group for sharing their art via slideshow.
The exhibit continues through Saturday March 19, and we are open Wed. through Saturday, noon to 5, with another ArtWalk/Reception on Friday March 18, 6-10 pm.

MANDALA is a Sanskrit word, loosely translated as "Sacred Circle". It is always exciting to see how our community interprets the mandala form in their own art. The variety in this exhibit is wide, with many personal and unique interpretations of the mandala form.

Art Center Sarasota is hosting a Community Exhibit, opening March 31. Join in, as Expressive Arts Florida and Towles Court are part of this collaborative event. More here.

A warm thank you to Diane McMillen, Karen Falconer and Luis Rosales of Firm Solutions, for facilitating "The Rhythm of Wellness" at our February networking event. More about them here.

April 7-10: Expressive Arts for Body/Mind/Spirit
The focus of this course is on Intermodal Expressive Arts as a holistic field, effecting change in all aspects of human experience: body, mind and spirit. The course will explore ways in which the different arts modalities bring growth and change, and how they work together as a holistic model. A variety of individual and group experiential processes will be introduced which focus on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experience.
Oct. 13-16: The Scope of Expressive Arts
Individual, Group, and Community    This course introduces the scope or continuum of Expressive Arts work, from the intrapersonal, to the interpersonal, to the social/cultural/planetary.  Both individual and collaborative expressive arts processes will be utilized in this course, and some attention will be given to designing and facilitating collaborative art projects.

Expressive Arts Florida Institute is a two-level training program for those interested in pursuing the Expressive Arts as a professional path, whether integrating it into an existing career, or beginning a career in the expressive arts field.
An INTERMODAL EXPRESSIVE ARTS TRAINING PROGRAM, Expressive Arts Florida Institute is grounded in a firm belief that an integrated arts approach is a powerful agent of change. Students will participate in visual art-making of various kinds, writing, poetry, music, movement, drama, and guided visualization. An emphasis will be on the power of following the natural creative flow from one arts modality to another.
The learning format is THREE WEEKEND INTENSIVE COURSES   per calendar year, generally in January, April, and October in Sarasota, FL. Each weekend is 25 hours of class time. In addition, there is a one-day orientation program for new students. There are also elective credits, which students can often earn in their own community, online communication with an advisor, and a Practicum/Internship at the end of the second year.  We offer flexibility for entry of new students; they may start the program with any of the Level 1 weekend intensives. COLLABORATIVE ART-MAKING

Creating community and connection by making art
together is one of our special interests at Expressive Arts Florida.
Making one piece of art out of many unique visions, styles and personalities -- what could be a better metaphor for what we need to do as humans inhabiting planet Earth? How do we honor our unique selves, and find a way to connect, share, and find commonality among such diversity. How do we create something beautiful out of such contrasting styles, viewpoints, and belief systems?

Here are 3 examples of community mandalas:

This one was created at our 2009 Community Mandala exhibit. It is one large mandala made up of over 100 tiny "seed mandalas". Each one is about 1.5 inches in diameter. Gallery guests and friends of all ages took time to sit and create their seed mandala, and add it to the collective. Although each mandala is tiny, some of the detail is incredible. It is currently hanging in our gallery; stop by and see it! Mixed Media
This second one was created at our 2010 Community Mandala exhibit. In contrast to the one above, we had one canvas and one mandala for many people to add too. This is a different kind of collaboration in that each person does not have their own defined space. The artists had to make decisions along the way about how to define the space, and whether it was OK to touch, add to, or even change another person's artistic contribution. We did pre-draw the concentric circles, and the quadrants in the center, to give a starting structure. Acrylic on canvas
This version of the collaborative mandala is underway now. It was started at this years Mandala Exhibit Opening Reception on Feb. 18. We pre-drew many circles, most are intersecting to one degree or another. Participants are making their own choices about where/what to paint. Stop by and add something; we would love to have you!   For three more examples of collaborative art, see the Flower of Life created by Sarasota Bay Club owners and staff  here, the Autumn Play quilt by Ginny Reynolds and residents of Westminster Shores here, and Collaborative Journey by the four Expressive Arts Partners: Victoria, Tamara, Kathleen, and Elizabeth  here.        |
